Featured Replies

how fast is the 1.6 tdi  estate and wots its like at around 80 miles a hour steady on the the motorway

thanks pete

to put it simple, no its not fast even chipped. the cars to big for the engine to be fast. As for sitting at 80mph, nearly all cars will sit at 80 no problems.

It will pure blow away the rozzers in their cozzies!!!

At 80mph it is so fast it will be doing 80mph

thanks lads it will be my first diesel car thats why the questions anythink else to look for with a diesel car

1.6 not quick at all, 2.0 140 much better. 170 is quick but then you'd have to buy a vRS

As its your first diesel I think this is a good question.

A better one is how does it drive to reach 80 mph.

I've driven a 1.9 A4 TDI and Octavia 1.8 tsi in recent years.  The power delivery is quite different.

The petrol TSI gives a smooth, sequential build  of power with little of what people call turbo lag but no rush as below.

Coming to  the 1.9 TDI diesel you get this elastic band effect with hesitation and a sudden wind up of power - at least the 1.9 tdi had this. The Audi A4 3 litre TDI had waves of these rushes of power but the turbo cut in very early so little lag was noticeable as it rolled out wave after wave of momentum.

You may or may not like to way the diesel achieves the same result as the petrol version. Its very much a matter of taste.

What size engine is in your Roomster?

I did 150,000 miles in a 70bhp Peugeot 306, after this a 1.6 TDi CR105 Octavia would have been like a rocket!

I have a petrol vRS, and I had a 1.6 diesel as a hire car for work. Did a 400 round trip in it and was impressed with how well it drove. You won't win any drag races but once it was on the motorway it was fine. It will easily do well over the speed limit all day.

lies, I have a 1.6 TDI superb and if you put the foot down it will shift alright

A 1.6 diesel in a big car will never be "quick" in my opinion but I suppose one mans quick is another mans adequate. I wouldn't even describe a 170hp vrs as quick.

Hi Mate,

suggest you go and take one on a long test drive loaded up with what you have in your car so you get to try it real world so to speak so you get a good idea what it'll be like to live with as only you will know if it's what you want and if it'll do the business for you. most modern diesels have the 2 'D's a DMF and a DPF

DMF= dual mass flywheel which smooths the diesel engine out a bit- search this forum and tinterweb for info on that

DPF= diesel particulate filter. this stops all the soot belching out the back and burns it off instead. modern diesels are not really suited to being used all the time for short journeys or constant stop start motoring as it tends to b8gger the DPF up. if theses are your typical journeys you might want to consider a petrol instead, though not the vRS unless you fancy the girl at the local petrol station :giggle:

I know someone with a superb 1.6 greenline which he loves, though he only walks slowly and he squeaks with every step. I thought it was his shoes but it's not ;)

enjoy.....

Hardly, no 105hp car that weighs at least 1500kg is going to set the world on fire....in fact agree with ed209. I like my diesel vRS but its performance is only adequate considering its 170 horses and lots of torque.....mainly down to the fact its heavy and doesnt have a great power to weight ratio.

A Saxo VTS with only 120hp is as quick as the Octavia as it only weighs 930kg

Wouldn't a 3.0 tdi seem wonderful on the octavia

Ours is a 1.9 105 so the same power and torque as the 1.6. Goes pretty well.

Also driven an Ibiza estate with the 1.6 tdi in and it actually went pretty well too. Can't imagine it would be hugely slower in the Octavia.

Fuel economy at 70mph in the Ibiza saw about 50-55mpg. Think it should have been more but don't know what was up.
