Expected tyre wear?

Featured Replies

Was just wondering what the expected lifetime mileage of a set of front tyres would be, I have a Monte 1.6 TDI CR with just over 6,000 miles and they are already starting to look a bit shabby - got Continental Contisport 2's fitted, no issues with pulling to left or right - thought they should be good for at least 10,000 miles or am I being far to ambitious?

Got more than that out of my vrs but mostly motorway miles. Depends heavily on your driving style of course.

A difficult question to answer as there are so many factors especially regarding fronts. i.e.

Quality of tyres, weight of engine ( diesels can be a big lump) style of driving (wheel spin etc,)

I managed 20,000 miles before I changed them on my little HTP and the rear ones were still good when I sold it at 22,000.

I got over 35K on my first VRs on Conti 2's but was prepared to give some miles up for the superiority of the Dunlop Mxx.

I can see the rear tyres lasting forever as they look as though they haven't worn at all.

Think it may just be due to where I live that is killing my tyres quickly as I don't drive too aggressively

Got 22k out of my Dunlops on my vrs

My previous post I omitted to say the Tyres were Bridgestone Turanza.

I'm almost at 24k on the cars first set of Dunlop sport maxx, I drive a vRS ...

You must drive like a clown if you need new tyres at 10k in a monte tdi (no offence :P).

Turanzas on the back still have over 3 mm of tread at 43,000 miles. Uniroyal Rainsport 2s on the front have less than 3 mm at about 9,000 miles - quite a difference. They're all getting replaced with Michelin PS3s

On our Fabia 2 HTP, we're on 3.3mm front / 5.5mm rear at 26k miles. Original fit BridgstoneTuranza ER300 - but I dont recommend them cos theyre very noisy and terrible/dangerous on any bit of snow or ice.

On our 2004 Fabia 1.2 HTP we used to get about 30k miles on the front set with Conti PremiumContact 2, slightly more on original fit Conti Ecocontact. Then switched to Michelin Energy Saver and got nearly 60k miles on the front!! (no grip whatsoever on snow though)

The Octavia 1.2Tsi front set is on 2.5 - 3.0mm at 28k with original fit Dunlop Sport SP 01

I have just over 19,000 on my tyres and still look good, that's with town driving.

I agree with you about Turanza on Ice and snow, mine were scary! I did wonder though how much it might have to do with the little 3 pot engine as the car is so light at the front . I mean would the same tyres be any better on say a 1,9Tdi?.

Possibly, but if they have no grip on snow/ice at the front on the light 1.2HTP, then they still probably wouldnt have any grip at the back end on any engine size, which is even scarier!

Guess I'm the wrong guy to talk about tyre wear, since 1) I will never drive with a tyre with less than 4mm for safety reasons, 2) I live in a Nordic country where I drive on winter tyres for 6 out of 12 months, and 3) the driving style required by my now 1.2 TDI GreenLine (and previously 1.4 TDI) does not burn any rubber, but I will usually make close to 20K miles on each set (summer/winter) before changing. I probably could make another 10-15K miles if I wanted to, but for the aforementioned safety reasons I never will. Since I drive 20K miles/year (10K summer, 10K winter) that means two full sets of tyres every two years. And for the record, I'm running Nokian Hakka Green in summer and Nokian Hakka R in winter.

My original rear tyres on my greenline have now done 25k but getting real close to needing replaced.

I only got 15k out of the fronts.

8000 miles on our Fabia VRS now, it has done a track day in amongst all these miles and we still have 6mm on the Dunlops it was delivered on.

I find the tyres to be more than adequate for day to day use but absolutely shirt on a track!
