Water Pump vRS.

Featured Replies

Well, the water pump on the vRS went today. AA recovered back to Aviemore.

Can any one give me links on how to change it? I need specific techical data for changing the cam belt, locking tools etc.

Got a spare pump n belt, so its up to my mates garage, on the ramps, and go where none of us has gone before.............

If your mates a mech its easy to do just mark it all up

Also as the water pump has failed make sure you get all the plastic out

What about locking tools mate?

Failed as in the impeller came apart and it just stopped pumping or failed as in the bearing went and the pulley moved?

Not quite sure yet. Not got it to bits as yet.

All i know is that in engineering terms, its fooked....   ;)

Oh dear.  Get a decent branded one mate and genuine coolant.  Might be an idea to do the damper too.

Had it been changed at all?

Did it keep running and just start to overheat or did it cut out and refuse to restart?

Got genuine parts. Is coolant not coolant?? I just use the stuff we use on the buses at work.......??

And what the damper?? I can only go with whats been changed in the service history, and none has been done. Cam belt done 65k. No sign on pump being done.

No it just overheated and i managed to pull over before it got to high. Starts and runs perfect.

If it still starts the pulley is still there so that's good.

The timing belt has a tensioner that should really be changed at the same time. That is what people call the damper

Ah nice one mate. Will make sure thats done.

What about locking tools mate?

No locking tools for 1.8T

Here is an external link for the Timing Belt 'How To' http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?2840728

Water pump is easy peasy when this is off, you shouldnt have any problems, but as mentioned before, if it is the impellers that have broken, make sure you get them all out before fitting the new pump, give the water system a good flush through when you have the pump off.

Hope this helps & good luck.

There is a pulley and a damper.

The pulley is an idler and the damper is the tensioner. TBH just buy the complete gates kit, it comes with a metal impeller pump too.

The belt is retardedly tight to get on so I just loosened the water pump bolts to let get a bit of slack then tightened it back up when the belt was on.

Thanks guys.

Much appreciated as always.

Yep, full belt kit, pump, and damper would be ideal if its a keeper.
