Electric window woes (of a different kind?)

Featured Replies

Hi, I have tried to research the answers to my problem but I can't find the right answers so therefore starting a new thread.

I bought the Fabia and everything worked fine until I got the dreaded leaky windows at the rear doors in the winter. I researched the problem and sorted it out. Everything was good again.

Later the radio had problems(very quiet), I researched but couldn't fix, I think it's to do with the connector in the roof lining.

Next was the electric windows, yes, the dreaded electric windows thing.

First they became a bit intermittent for a few days then stopped working altogether. I checked for broken wires at door/fuses(twisted them too),all OK. Decided I would get new switch off eBay when one comes up locally(was winter so not too important).

After a few months, they suddenly started working....hallelujah!!

Sadly after a few days they stopped working again....what the hell?! At least I now knew it wasn't the switch or motor....right?

Rechecked wires/connectors, all fine(can't see behind the connection to the car from the door opening).

Windows working again.....whooo!!

Next time in the car, not working.....Grrr!!

Anyway, I tracked it down that if I pull the top black block connector at the door opening and then re-plug it in, the windows will work now matter how many times I open and close the door. With the car unlocked I have tried the key in the door and held at unlock and the windows will wind down(I don't think I have tested the window closing in this way yet but will do). I THINK that when I lock the door(I will check if it's via key and/or fob after it's been for it's MOT), something is isolating the electric windows from working and when I unlock the doors, this something isn't tripping back to working mode.

There is perhaps a really simple answer to this but I hate working on cars, especially electrics. motor bikes on the other hand I often work on.

Any idea which component is causing my woes?

Thanks in advance.

Probably not answer to your problem but I suggest to get tube of dielectric grease (silicone grease) and smear lightly in electric connectors then plug it back to prevent water/humidity causing corrosion and connection problems. This is what I always do whenever I unplug connector.

Back from MOT(passed).

Before setting off, I tried closing window with the key, it didn't work so I tried unplugging the block connector and connecting it which starts the windows working again but this time they wouldn't work. I drove 8miles to the test place via national speed roads with the windows stuck down, when just round the corner they started to work.

I didn't lock the car and left the windows down for the MOT but the guy tried unlocking the car with remote fob which I am guessing stopped them working again because when I left the test centre, they wouldn't work so I drove out of the village and pulled over and did the block connector 'trick' and it worked fine.

Got home, gave it ten mins without locking the doors and tried again, they don't work!! :wall:

I tried the block connector 'trick', still won't work!! :wall:  :wall:  :wall:

Any ideas?

Corni, thanks for your suggestion. I ride motorbikes on and off road and therefore have used the dialectic grease for years.

Should this be in the technical section? If so, could someone post the link to this post in there since I am unable to do this due to not being here long enough?

Has anyone had any similar problems?

Problems like this can be complex due to the system.  Each front door has a control unit/combined window motor and it is controlled by the convenience unit adjacent to the clutch pedal.  When you operate a window switch you are requesting that a window is operated by the motor which receives its instruction from the convenience unit through the door control unit.

First off you need to use some diagnostic equipment to see if there are any faults and to see if the control units and switches are interacting with each other.

One question is, What am I doing when I unplug it?.  My guess would be that you are removing the power to the door control unit and when reconnecting it you are effectively rebooting it, so your problem could be a faulty drivers door control unit.

Thanks for taking the time to help out, it makes sense to me that what you have said is happening.

Do you know what testing equipment I need to find to test this control unit? Or better still, is there a detailed thread on here of someone doing this?

I will try a search.

Thanks again.
