Technika Freeview set top box, chaneel zero?

Featured Replies

Anyone got one of these Tesco STBs with "channel zero" for accessing BBC I-Player etc?

The channel zero functionality seems to have disappeared.....anyone else experiencing that and/or know whats going on?

Their website seems to have say the service is unavailable - but offers no explanation.

Sorry Juan, I have Virgin Media.

I have one of those boxes and channel zero disapeared a few months ago. As you say the website is still there but is not a great deal of help. Googling Channel Zero will give you some more information. It may be that they have just run out of cash. I do not use that box anymore as I have bought a Panasonic HD Freview+ recorder and Blu-ray DVD box.

Well I've managed to get BBC I-Player working through a HDMI lead from a Samsung Tablet, but its a bit of a pain.

The box was only £45 but its effectively a bog standard Freeview box now and you can get those for a bit less than that. :(

This seems to explain the situation:

It also has a very simple fix, which you could do for as little as £23.

Reading on in that blog there is a simple and totally free fix as follows

If necessary install telnet client on a PC connected to the same network as the STB (Windows PC is fine)

Telnet to the IP address of the STB  (can be seen in STB on screen menu - install - ethernet)

Now with box on standby at the root prompt enter:

idownload

setdn www.terrestrialtv.co.uk

start

and wait half an hour or so whilst the box downloads some data. Turn it on and hey presto, the channel zero stuff is back.

This will work until you turn the box off at the mains, or there's a power cut.

If that happens you can repeat the data download for as many times as you like as long as the data is still on www.terrestrialtv.co.uk

I have tried this and it works.

Yeah the £23 was assuming you'd buy a Raspberry PI so you didn't need to have a PC on.

PC doesn't have to stay on. The STB stores what it needs as long as its connected to power.

Its not a perfect solution but as the loss of channel zero forced me into looking into alternatives it will do for now. We only really used I-Player, all the other stuff was pants.
