New Passat - End of the Superb?

Featured Replies

may be a tempting option to replace my VRS when the time comes (will be in my 40's then and will need an old mans car  )

Old mans car?

I am 25 and I drive one! :P

Superb 2 has been confirmed to us, wil be using the Audi A6 platform so wil be different to the Passat.

Ross, I don't suppose they confirmed an approximate launch date as well?

Does anyone know if it will really look anything like the picture that was in a mag the other day?

Any info gratefully received.

All the Best

Chris

No launch date as yet. This is far from official Skoda word but was told Superb2 and Roomster were both given the go ahead, and the Roomster is on its way.

Thanks Ross. As ever, you are a mine of information.

We'll live in anticipation then.

As a previous Passat B5 owner, I was under the impression that the B5 series Passats at least were based upon an A6 platform? Or is it a stretched A4 platform?

Either way, I can confirm that the Passat is a wonderful motor, and IMHO, better than the Superb in refinement, although obviously the Superb whoops it on price and space.

I only got rid of mine because of running costs. :(

No it's not based on the A6 platform, some think the Superb is based on the A6 platform as it's bigger than a Passat but it's not, the Passat is a platform in its own right, and the Superb is based on the Passat from the Chinese market (which is longer than every other countries passats, due to the chinese being well known as such a tall race  ).

As far as refinement goes, having driven both cars extensively (as a cabbie) they are exactly the same, the switches, plastics, build quality etc etc are identical, the Superb however has more kit for the money, and as you say more space.

The new passat however, is very nice and bigger than the old one so more of a direct competition to the Superb, the old passat was aimed at a different market, the Superb shouldn't really be compared to the older Passats as it's more of an executive vehicle, whereas the old passat was just a family saloon/repmobile.

Either way the platform is exactly the same other than the length. In the same way that the Octavia is the same as the Golf and Leon etc.

The platform is considered the same, same suspension, brakes, steering electricl systems etc. The Superb IS the same platform as the Audi A4, A6, even A8 and the B5 Superb. The dimensions just change a little to give them thier individual wheel bases etc.

Now with the new Passat VW have gont back to the previous state of using a transverse design so they can use DSG.

B5 Passat is indeed based on the first generation A4, it uses all the same suspension and /engine/gearbox combinations... Its just the different bodyshells

that the Superb, A6 etc use......

The new Passat is actually based on the Golf MKV platform as the Octy and Leon/Altea/Toledo/Jetta/A3/Touran/Golf Plus is... Again just different bodyshells

cheers

The B5 Passat is and has allways been a better looking and used better interior materials than the Superb, the only better thing with the Superb is the rear legroom.... Comparing a Superb against and Audi A6 is just rediculous.....

The Passat B5 in both guises was allway looked at as more than just a rep/family mobile and was considered a junior Audi......

I'm sorry but the interior materials are NOT any better in the Passat (old shape), i've owned and driven both and I can assure you there is no difference in quality. infact if anything, I'd say the Superb is slightly better owing to it being a newer design, but it'd be a negliable difference.

And comparing the Superb to an A6 is not ridiculous, really, what else would you compare it too? The passat is similar in size to the A4, and the Superb is similar in size to an A6 it's simple.

The Superb might not ever win any road tests where it is compared against an A6, but that does not stop it being a similar type of car:confused: It's a LOT bigger than a passat, not just in rear leg room but all round.

The Superb is a nice car, and good VFM, however if you're comparing it to the A6..... The A6 every time.

The new Superb(2) is based on the new A6, and will have a 2 stage hinged rear boot-lid/hatch affair (so my dealer told me:) )

Can't say I like the sound of that. Maybe when we see it it will look better than it sounds.

With the new Superb theres also rumour of an Estate version.

We have spent ages looking for a new car to replace the Octy & the Superb seems incredible value for money. By the time youve added a few extras to the L&K Octy like **** nav , xenons etc the superb 2 litre diesel can be found for the same or less money, With the better ride, more space etc & better build quality than the Octy its a no brainer really so the new Superb will be ordered next week

I owned a 99 Passat TDI SE... So I do have a prospective as well..

The Superb was basically born from the unused pre facelift Passat Plus that VW were going to build but did'nt.... The ONLY area that the Skoda is bigger than the VW is in the

rear legroom length every where else it is identical....

VW also when they facelifted the Passat also changed certain items in the suspension in an attempt to sharpen the chassis against the newer Mondeo etc..

I believe using the changes from the A4...

The Passat is bigger than the MK1 A4 and possibly equal or very close to the A6..

Interior quality.. sitting in both VW and Skoda... The dash is the same until you look at the centre console of the Skoda which looks and feels cheap compared to the VW.. Also the Stereo and instruments look cheaper next to the better colour and quality of the VW ... This is unless you are spending on the top spec 2.8 Superb which is taking it into Audi money!!

Skoda attempted to market the Superb as a rival to the A6, 5 series, and E class..

The only thing it can rival with these is internal space....

The physical design dates back to 1996......

I'm not knocking the Skoda but you can buy the equivalent VW for similar money

given the amount of Passats sold and the residuals not being very strong for a VW..

cheers

I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one

My passat was one of the last of the old shape models - with the chrome bits & twin circular taillights (when lit up).

I really dont know where you're coming from with the interior quality bit  they both use the rubber coated plastic and fake wood trim!! having done over 100k in each car I prefer the Superb, it definately has more shoulder room than the Passat and not only is the rear better for legroom, but it's much more comfy for 3 big adults to sit next to each other, so it cant only be the legroom that is bigger.

The Suspension is identical, as I can source all the spares for the Superb from my local VW dealer, using the parts drawings from the Passat!!

I already said that if you compared a Superb to a A6 the A6 would win, but as I said once already, that doesn't stop it being the same type of car.

As for the Passat having the same or near space as an A6 - your definately having a laugh there mate.

  • 2 weeks later...

I had a 2001 Passat for 3 years, and a 2004 Superb Comfort for 9 months before I got made redundant. I thought the build quality was very similar, though I did think the seats in the Passat were of a better quality.

I will add my opinion if that's OK?

I agree with johnjohnhealy about the legroom issue the Passat is not in the same class and it never will be, even the new shape Passat.

I can however agree with some of ecklad's comments. I believe that VW is better than Skoda just because it's VW, I mean the styling is so much better and some of the interior switches and trim on the Superb is more like the Seat build quality as opposed to that of the VW build quality.

Don't get me wrong I like my Superb but I would still like to be back behind the wheel of a VW, loved my Bora and it's the styling that sets them apart.

well all i can say is my brake caliipers say audi on them (including the 4 little circles), if i yank the plastic cover off the the engien its say auid and 4 little cirlces - even 'made in germany'....

makes my collegue with an audi a4 feel pretty sick..lol..

in our company collection - and parked next to my superb i have an audi a4, a passat and vw polo...

to be honest i really can see much difference (other than the superb being bigger than all of them!)
