New Passat - End of the Superb?

Featured Replies

Don't get me wrong, I love my Superb, so please bear with me on this one....

VW seem to have learned a lot about what could be improved on the Passat by looking at the Superb. The Passat has grown in all directions, including the length, now 62mm longer than the previous model. The equipment levels seem to have improved a lot over the last model. The road tests seem to be very positive. And DSG boxes on the TDI's seems to be an improvement on Tiptronic.

Does this mean the end of the road for the Superb? If only we knew if there was going to be a Superb 2.

And if I read correctly it has now changed platform to an extended A5 base i.e MK5 Golf/Octy2/Leon2/Altea as its has a transverse engine.

Since the new B6 Passat utilizes Golf V component sharing (HVAC, engines, transmissions, etc., etc.) the B6 Passat has moved to a transverse engine layout which also means a switch from a Torsen-based AWD system to a Haldex-based AWD system.

I am sure there will be another Superb, but for being bigger and better than the new Passat, l am not so sure, my guess will be the same wheelbase as new Passat but longer over hangs, and bigger diff in styling than with last model, I could be WAY off, but Skoda needs to be more than just the poor brother, needs a big car in the line up, a full range of cars, Skoda's new design push on a big car could really work l think :thumbup:

I could be wrong but hope l am not :rolleyes:

had a browse round a new Passat in france a few weeks ago, sorry to admit it but I thought it was a stunning car

It's amazing how many people are so inlove with Skoda, when I could remember a time it was the world's most stupid make of cars.

Go Skoda.

The Passat looks really nice. Not seen it in the flesh but magazine shots show a classy car.Think they are even going to sell them for less than the outgoing model

Don't know what the prices will be though.Obviously more than a Superb which should still keep the superb an attractive buy especially as they seem to be throwing lots of extra kit in now.Leather,Sat Nav etc.Not to be sniffed at :)

saw the new polo facelift yesterday....ok it looked alright but i didnt go oo wow look! for the passat it hmm some angles its lush but then it just looks flabby :o love the lights! but photo's never do any car justic :) for the superb ...imagin a roomster front sleek end maybe a coupe roofline and something simular to the insigna!!!! that would be nice! :D something like this!...only a quick sketch :D

saw new passat in the flesh yesterday gave way to the bloody monsterous thing it seams huge compared to old one!! keep thinking its a phaeton when i see it.

Lovely car!

keep thinking its a phaeton when i see it.

Saw one on a test drive from the local VW dealer and thought the same! Only caught a glimpse but looked good, a definite improvement over the outgoing model I thought.

Will be interested to see if Skoda come up with anything similar...

New superb has only had a slight facelift like the fabia received.. new dash, steering wheel. alloys and slightly different bumpers thats it.

hardly a facelift mk2:( very disapointed....mk2.5!!! will be nice ...we hope

Anyone have any pics of the new facelifted Superb?

I sat in one of the new Pasties at the weekend and was very impressed.

Real quality feel to it , and the bit that surprised me was how little the difference in price was to the high spec golfs. It's a hell of a lot more car for not much money extra

Yep the new Passat looks good.

I wonder whether VW are planning to stretch it for the Asian market like they did for the old model?

The new Superb will probably be based on the stretched Asian version (If there is to be one) just as it is now. Otherwise the Superb Mk2 will be a straight Passat clone I would have thought.

Cheers

Lee

I think the new Passat is simply gorgeous, and would happily have one..if the rear leg room is enough.

  • 6 months later...

Well my Superb's got 18 months left to run on the lease and if Skoda doesn't do a serious facelift between now and then it's a pasat i'm afraid!

Don't get me wrong I love it to bits, but could you see yourself driving something with a dash like the existing superbs in 2009?

The new Passat is a very nice looking car, but having been in one, there is nowhere near as much room as in the Superb, and it certainly isn't available for anywhere near as low a price, you can get a brand new Superb for under 13K, and in my opinion the Superb is actually a class above the passat, its rivals should be BMW 5 series and Mercedes E class's, but due to its price its always compared to Passats and Mondeos

Passat is a lovely car though.

I cant see a proper facelift for the Superb anytime soon though, its only been around since 2002, how old was the Octavia before the mk2 was released?

Whats that new 'Super Skoda' that was in the news last week?

Superb 2 has been confirmed to us, wil be using the Audi A6 platform so wil be different to the Passat.

Lets hope they don't add the silly electronic (solenoid) button operated handbarke like in the PAssat - not nice!

:)

I quite liked that to be honest, especialy the hill start function, and the extra space it frees up in the centre console.

Does anyone know if the electronic parking brake constantly monitors itself or not? only my Superb rolled down the drive with the handbrake on the other day, luckily just stopped in the slight dip at the end of the drive without hitting anything! just wondered if an electronic handbrake would have detected movement and set harder?

(I just leave mine in gear aswell now)

Citroen Xantia anyone?

Good News on the Superb 2 Russ - may be a tempting option to replace my VRS when the time comes (will be in my 40's then and will need an old mans car  )

Yep had one of those as well & it went walkies one day, thankfully stopped on its own. The Octy only stopped after it had crossed a couple of gardens & met an imovable object, you know the sort that has a front door !!

New Passat is very nice - I'd be seriously tempted by the estate....

Looked at New Passat again today. Still does not appear to be much larger than Octavia. And second, why do they have to offset the steering wheel to the left in such a big car?? I cannot tolerate cars where the steering is offset to the centre line of the seat! Bad engineering.
