Breakdown cover renewal time. Green Flag any good?

Featured Replies

Currently with the RAC and have been for about 8 years.

But it seems that loyalty isn't a word they understand and they are asking for £145

to cover me and the Mrs for another year. That's for roadside, recovery, accident care

and motor legal care.

Was thinking of switching to green flag, they offer a higher level of cover

(recovery plus) which includes home start type cover and our premium with them is

£92 covering both our cars. And £121 if I upgrade my cover to personal so that my

van will be covered too as well as anything else I might be driving

But I'm not sure if they are any good.

What's the general opinion out there? Any of you lot members?

Horror stories? Saved the day stories?

I've a little while until I renew so let me know what you think.

I've just switched from AA to Green Flag - I've usually managed to negotiate decent discounts with the AA at renewal as I've not had a callout with them since I joined in 2009, but they didn't play ball this year and GF were significantly cheaper.  Did some web-based research for the usual horror stories but there doesn't seem to be much difference between any of the big three.

I think a lot of the devil is in the detail of what they cover, etc. - for my purposes I wanted something cheap and basic.

Whoever you use, go through quidco to get some money back! I went with Green Flag and got £15 back.

Apart from a spell with the Driving Instructors' Association, we have been with Green Flag for about 20 years.  I can't fault them.  On the occasions we have needed them the have been prompt and courteous.

On one occasion I had to call them for a breakdown in Romford at 1PM on a Saturday, I was back at home in Tottenham by 2:30!  Then they were back Monday morning to take the car to the garage which had screwed up in the first place.

About 13/14 years ago (christ, can't believe it's been that long) was with my dad in a horrible old Mk3 Fiesta which snapped it's accelerator cable just outside Doncaster on the A1. Cable snapped about half way along it's length inside the sheath so wasn't a road-side repair Dad could do himself, Called Green Flag who proceeded to send out a near-by independent mechanic to pick us up, surprised us that they didn't have their own fleet but aside from the confusion about where we were (GF sent the guy in completely the wrong direction up the A1) it was mostly ok and they gave Dad a £15 rebate because of the time taken to get to us after the mechanic's misadventure...

I'm lead to believe that Green Flag is run differently now and has it's own fleet of mechanics much more like AA/RAC?

I use Green flag, have only called them once in the last 4years due to sliding on ice on a sharp bend on a hill and getting stuck but blocking the entire road, I mentioned that any normal car/van wouldn't make it up the hill, the local farmer also had problems earlier in the morning with his defender  (didn't know this until he turned up on foot to get to his cattle) so they sent a low loader, twonks, they couldn't get any closer than 1/2mile to me due to the size of the country lanes and road conditions.

They did however manage to get me out by pee'ng on the ice infront of the car, melting the ice allowing me to get traction and carry on up the hill

Happy with their service & customer service & the factI got a refund when I changed to the S-Max from the Octavia as their statistics show the S-Max is a more reliable car
