Damaged windscreen from screenwash

Featured Replies

Bought some halfords ready mixed screenwash (dont judge - halfords was the only place to go and I didn't fancy a 200 mile journey with a dirty screen - it was that bad).

First pull on the indicator stalk to apply the screenwash, and all seemed ok. I have since however noticed that the windscreen appears to be damaged. In certain light you can see the water marks where the liquid has landed, and it is discolouree.

Tried a good wash/glass clean but no avail.

Im not sure whats caused it. Prehaps the screen was really hot after being in the sun. Is there a coating on windscreens which could have been damaged? My car was applied with autoglym lifeshine as a feeebie, and im thinking that maybe it is this coating which has been damaged. I know not a great deal is applied for lifeshine, but the windscreen was definitely treated.

Considering claiming from halfords, or tailgating a lorry on the m1 hoping for a stine chip and cheap windscreen replacement on insurance.

Anyone experienced this before?

try auto glym glass polish its the nuts mate, try it and see.

Hi storm, no there is no coating on your windshield that can be damaged in that way. Windscreen wash of any type cannot damage your screen either. It sounds as if you have a contaminant on your screen and your wiper blades too. It may well be Lifeshine that has been allowed to come into contact with the screen or wipers. Don't forget to clean those as well. At this time of year with tree sap and all sorts of other stuff in the air it's not uncommon and can be the very devil to remove without a good cleaner. icemanmjm is giving good advice about autoglym glass cleaner. It's very good and a cut above the others.

What Washer Fluid were you using previously?

What Halfords product was it exactly, you say 'ready to use windscreen wash', but what size and price.?

Do you still have some left?

After seeing if you can get the screen back OK

maybe take advice from a Windscreen Fitting Place if there is still a problem.

Maybe check with Halfords on their product and just tell Customer Services via an Email what the result of using the product was.

You never know.

(I have seen people buying Ready to use Antifreeze to top up the windscreen washer bottle, obviously this will not be the case here.)

dont recon you damaged it with screen wash. its either dirty or contaminated but not damaged. clean it properly as recommended above. BTW, i got 25L of concentrated screen wash, from euro car parts, for £17, which can be diluted with around 100L of water in normal use! less in winter of corse, but still, fantastic value and works quite well!

Nah, halfords screen wash won't have damaged your screen. It's the same basic solution as any other screen wash.

As for picking up a new screen through your Insurrance if you tailgate a lorry you'd likely pick up more stone chips to your bumper and bonnet.

Exactly, if that's the route you want to go down you'd be better off with a centre punch or something.

I have removed many wiper marks and the like with Poorboy's APC deluted with water. Isopropyl Alcohol is also fine for the job. Remember to clean the wipers too, and don't let it get on your paint/clear coat unless you want to strip it for wax/sealant.

It can seem like the marks are IN the windscreen and can't be removed - but with the right product they almost always can.

As above, if you waltz into Halfrods with your original idea.... they would laugh you out of the store, don't do it.

As for lifeshine, it could be some of the coating coming off, but to be honest its a bit of a waste of time anyway, and eventually all that they put on... comes off, just like any coating or polish you or i could put on. Give a glass cutting polish a go if it won't go with autoglym glass polish, but as said, the glass has no coating on it naturally, its simply glass.

I would agree with all the above suggestions. Glass is unlikely to be damaged beyond repair.

Just one thought though. The Mk 1 Fabia had serious issues with people not using the correct Vag screenwash which led to water leaks due to excessive pressure in the lines.Usually resulting in a flooded boot. Not sure whether this is the case with the Mk 11 but I only ever use Vag screen wash to be safe.
