Boot handle not working - can't open boot.

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Can anyone help me out please.

2002 Fabia,   today the boot stuggled to open when I went to open it.   When I say struggled,  it made a very weak sounding electrical whirr when I went to open the boot via the handle.   It failed to open on first attempt,   2nd attempt it made a slightly stronger sounding whirr (more normal sounding) and the boot opened.

Got home, tried the same again,  and same problem again - 1st attempt it made a very faint whirr (not normal sounding),  and then 2nd attempt normal-ish sounding whirr.

Slammed boot, tried it again,  and NOTHING.   Boot handle isn't making any electric whirring noises.   DEAD!

Have to open boot manually now with the switch next to drivers door sill.

So far I've checked:

Fuses -  the very first fuse (top left corner 10Amp) fuse was blown - replaced fuse,   low and behold boot back to how it was,   1st attempt low whirr sound (but not enough to unlock the boot),  2nd attempt NOTHING.  DEAD.  100% DEAD.   Can't open boot again.

Checked fuses,  still ok, not blown.

Checked the boot latch mechanism at bumper level - seems clean and straight.

REmoved the boot door cover,  visually checked the parts,  nothing,  all connections seem clean.      No leaking or rusting,   no problems from the wiper - that works too.

I'm guessing the electric boot mechanism in the boot lid itself is dead??

Any pointers guys?    common problem?  easy fix?

Forgot to say,  the boot lights work fine,   as do all the interior lights and the puddle door lights.

After a bit more fact finding,   turns out the boot popper gubbins (is it called a solenoid??)  which lives at the bottom catch (ie behind the bumper) is a bit dicky.

Pushed and pulled at it,  it got it working 50% of the time.    Sprayed some WD40 in it, made it work faster but sadly it still is intermittant.

So looks like I need a new one of those.

VW garage told me it costs about £25+vat,  which if right,  isn't too bad afterall

Query:

Where is this boot release switch inside the car?!

drivers side seat, down to the right, behind the fuel filler cap switch. There's also an emergency pull behind the drivers side wheel arch boot lining.

The ON tab in the cubby activates the rocket launchers in case you hadn't figured that one out either :)

Only on the 1.4 engined Fabias, on the 1.9s it operates the rear Freelander magnet. :)

:moon:  ;)

The on lever is actually for the turbo

All fixed now,   bought a complete new 'striker' assembly,  which is basically the 'catch' mechanism which is bolted to behind the bumper area.    It's actually the electronic actuator which was broken,  but u can't buy that on it's own.   It comes with the catch/striker plate.

Fitting is easy, but u need to get the correct bit (is it called Multispline??),  which my local halfords don't stock, but fortunatly my friend had in his garage.
