I've got me a clonk

Featured Replies

My 05 VRS has developed and annoying and sometimes alarmingly loud 'clonk' that sounds as if it is coming from the right hand side around the rear wheel area. It sounds like the kind of noise you'd get if you drove over a golf ball and it flicked up and hit the bottom of the car. It doesn't happen at any particular time or place but it has occured at these occasions:

reversing out of drive

going over a speed bump (slow)

going over a small rut at slow speed

entering a roundabout (slight left lock)

going round the same roundabout (medium right lock)

travelling on a glass smooth road at 60 ish (repeatedly)

crossing the rumble strips entering a 30 zone

changing into 2nd/3rd

turning a corner (slow speed)

So I am pretty darned confused.

Emptied boot

took out spare and jack box

took to garage and checked:

front suspension

rear suspension

shocks

discs

pads

jacked up back end and checked bearings/bushes

took dealer for a spin and managed to coax 2 quiet ones (typical!!) out of it. He says to drive it til it gets worse so they will have a better chance of finding it. Does this sound like the dreaded captive rear anti roll bar nut?????

Please help, I'm almost up to 11 on the stereo volume now!

Cheers

Rossi

Hmm, clonked about 20-30 times tonight on a 2 mile round trip to the shop. Sounds like it could come from the front, possibly, so maybe it is the nylon coating on the front ARB braking away. Either way, it's bad enough now so it's definately going back next week.

Mine does it too, especially when I leave our estate and go over speed bumps.

Be nice if you find out what it is.

I'd start with new ARB drop links. But you may never trace it. I've had a similar noise from new (nearside) and new spings, dampers, strut top mounts and ARB links has failed to cure it...
