1.8T 4x4 Estate, looking for advice - Tyres

Featured Replies

Hi All

My mapped 2002 1.8T 4x4 Estate will soon need new tyres and I'm looking for advice.

I was somewhat surprised to see all the tyres appear to have worn at the same rate, given the 4x4 system is not full-time. They have worn evenly and are all down to ~2mm.

I have a set of Michelin Alpin winter tyres, on a spare set of alloys, so am really looking for something for use during the "non winter months".

The car is currently fitted with Goodyear F1 GSD's, which have lasted ~2 years / 21K miles.

I'd like something with good grip in the wet. The current Goodyears are a little noisy, so quieter would be better.

Based on a bit of tyre review reading I'm leaning towards these: http://www.camskill.co.uk/m62b0s291p109523/Goodyear_Tyres_Car_Goodyear_EfficientGrip_Performance_Goodyear_Efficient_Grip_Performance_-_205_55_R16_91W_TL_Fuel_Eff_%3A_B_Wet_Grip%3A_A_NoiseClass%3A_1_Noise%3A_68dB

largely based on this review: http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Goodyear/EfficientGrip-Performance.htm

any views?

Uniroyal rainsports

Thanks for that, I'll look them up.

+1 for rainsports at around £50 a corner - Camskill

I would recommend the Uniroyal Rainsport 2 as well. The previous set of tyres also wore evenly, Sean.

How do rainsports take to being thrashed within an inch of their lives in really hot weather ?

eg How would they handle a hot track or similar ?

+1   on rainsport   or take a look at rain expert for something a little cheaper

They are good in the dry!

Just as good as any other dry weather tyre

Thanks for the advice guys - a resounding thumbs up for the uniroyals!!

Hankooks are good. V12's

Mine is currently trying to kill off my winter contacts before adopting kleber quadraxer all season goodness :D oh and they are 195/65/15 which on the 4x4 adds to the driving fun hugely.

I put Dunlop Sport Blue response on mine, lovely and quiet and no complaints in any other areas.

Many thanks for all the advice. After much researching I eventually went for x4 Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance (205/55/16 91W). I did give the Uniroyals serious consideration, given the recomendations on here, but the Goodyears came in at around the same price (fitted) and seemed to be rated higher in all the comparisons I could find.

I was probably ultimately swayed by these 2 reviews: http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/2013-Test-World-Summer-Tyre-Test.htm / http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/accessories-tyres/60112/goodyear-efficientgrip

They have been on for 2 weeks now and the biggest detectable difference between these and the old Goodyear F1's they replaced is a marked reduction in road noise. My Fuelly account also seems to suggest a small, but nevertheless potentially significant improvement in fuel economy - time will tell.

For what it's worth the new tyres are rated B for fuel economy, A for wet grip and 68dB for noise vs the Uniroyals E for fuel economy, B for wet grip and 71dB for noise.

They seem equally good in the wet or dry and to my surpise my local Skoda main dealer actually got within a few £'s / tyre of the best fitted price I could find - Formula 1 fully fitted price for x4 ordered online = £284.

The tyres were £250 delivered from Camskill (+ fitting required @ ?? cost), £338 fully fitted from Mytyres and £318 fully fitted from eTyres. Rainworth's supplied and fitted them for £300. The convenience / confidence of them being fitted by my local main dealer was, in my mind, worth the £16 premium compared with Formula 1 (no direspect intended to FORMULA 1).
