What's the process of elimination

Where should I start with my air con.

It's not working

Do I start with;

a simple re gas

vag com

Compressor test?

I don't really know what the first point of call should be.

I'd like to think that just getting it re gassed will fix it but I don't know what I'm looking at to know if there's anything more serious before potentially wasting my money.

Regas, but by a pro who will actually do a proper job and spend a bit of time testing things as a matter of course.

Its worth spending £60 rather than a kwikfit special or something at £30.

Agreed, don't use kwikfit - I have used coolcaraircon before and they sorted the problem - search on google to see if they cover your area - otherwise just put kent air con in the search and it'll give you some that have reviews

Compressor test? How do you go about that?

I've no idea, was just naming things

Thanks for all the advice chaps, ill get a pro to have a look. Will try your suggested places.

So when they re gas it they should be able to diagnose a problem if it turns out it needs more than just a top up.

Thank you :)

i went in to a place and went "my air con has stopped"

he plugged in for a regas and went "turn it on"

i did

he went "go on then"

i said " I have"

he said "well there's your problem your compresor isn't engaging so the clutch is broken so no point in regassing"

total cost zero pounds

and given the quote for a new compressor and fitting was £700 it has stayed that way!!

Did this guy check the wiring to the compressor before concluding that the compressor clutch had sheared? He sounds very confident!

The "clutchless" compressor is a common fault but if it happened how you said it in that dialog, I hope I  don't visit that guy. I went to my local VAG garage to a guy I know well, he said it had the exact same symptoms but undertook more tests to try and make sure it was the compressor and not something silly. There is even a visible check to see if the bolt in the middle spins with the bearing or not, did he do this?

Turns out, it was something silly for me. Some of the wires towards the compressor had shorted, £5 fix and ice cold air! :)

I dont know where to look for the compressor, or even what it looks like so I dont know if I would be able to check the wires.

I NEED COLD AIR!

You need to take it to a specialist and pay the bill they present you when it's fixed.

Just looking for somewhere in Kent. Going to book it tomorrow

This is the one check he did do. The pulleys are turning the belt pulling but the bolt in the middle of the compressor pulley isn't turning

might be worth a try re-gassing it first, my wife's C4 the compressor seemingly wouldn't cut in, what it was is the low pressure cut-out acting on the electromagnetic clutch, so with no gas in the system it wouldn't start the compressor "dry"

as with all AC things, often best left to the pro's a decent garage should be able to both fault find, fix and re-gas the system without much bother

coincidentally the reason for the gas ****ing out of the wife's C4.. condenser has been smashed in a previous owner incident... expensive to replace and windows are cheap.. haha
