Dash Cam - suggestions!

Featured Replies

I've been thinking about getting one for a while - purely for insurance purposes.

My misses was in an accident on the M25 last week and we have no witnesses yet, even though as far as we are concerned (and the Police Officers attending) it was clearly the third parties fault. But regardless, a dash cam would instantly provide us with the answer. So that has shifted me to looking to buy one.

Therefore I'm looking for one that can go infront of the rear-view mirror, can be easily detached if necessary, and can store a good 3-4hr motorway drive. I'm not fussed about GPS or anything else, as its not going to be for personal use as such!

What have we got?

OOO, and I forgot to add I'm not looking to spend a lot. £50 ideally, pushable to £100 if you do a good sell!

Mobius dash cam...  Footage I've seen of it is incredible for a cam not much bigger than a matchbox...

That one? Looks like a good size!

Presumably the loop mode is what most people use is it? So you just save the last 5 minutes saved if something happens in it?

"Loop recording (5 min. clips with one sec. video overlap, so no lost video). Pressing the mode button while in Loop Record mode will make the current clip being recorded write protected so it will not get over written during looping. The file can be manually deleted, though."

This is the kind of camera I want as well, although I want one which starts recording as soon as I turn the ignition on and stops when I turn the ignition off. I don't want to be starting the car and then have to turn the camera on with a separate button, the chances are when an incident does happen the wife or I would have forgotten to turn the camera on.  Any of you technocrats know if this or other cameras would be suitable for me.

I've recently bought one after posting a similar question to you and BossFox who organised a group buy recently recommended the following from one of the site sponsors

It arrived the next day too and sits in front of the rear view mirror

USB is always 5V.  You can get a cigarette lighter converter for the 12V->5V conversion.

That's very nice, but not really fair comparing £160-ish to £60-ish for the Mobius... ;)

OOps sorry yes you're right, not fair to compare the 2... but I didn't LOL- I didn't see the bit about not wanting to spend more than a ton so the Blackvue won't be on the OPs shopping list but it might be of interest to anyone else thinking of getting one.

Thing that prompted me to reply was the reference above to avoid dodgy dealers as I found smartview were excellent (as in excellent to deal with not excellent dodgy dealers!!!)

cheers

I now use my iphone and its spot on ! No speed or info just video footage

I've just got an HP F200 Car Camcorder, cost £100 and I'm well impressed so far.

No GPS, but it does have collision and motion detection.

I've got an old Class 2 4GB Micro SDHC card installed which is below the Class 6 it recommends but I think it's fine :)

See what you think, make sure you choose 1080p HD

That's a great camera for the money you paid for it :)

Do you use an app for this? Or just in constant record on your dash when driving?

There might be some useful suggestionsin the thread below.

Thanks, I'll take a look!

Watch this: http://www.techmoan.com/blog/2013/7/8/the-mobius-camera-the-do-it-all-mount-anywhere-1080p-micro-c.html , then read this: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1904559 and then follow the links to the reliable suppliers...  lots of fake stuff out there!

The mobius is definitely looking like a good buy!

What is the advantage of collision and motion detection? Does something pop up in the recording or wa?

How much footage can you get on 4gb?

The quality is definitely good!

Constant record on the iPhone :) , I've tried the digital camer but limit you too 15 minutes then you need to hit record again !

The cam has a g-sensor and if it senses a shock it saves footage to a file that is then not overwritten.

Not a lot of footage on a 4gb card at all I'm guessing, not been out enough to find out as yet. I will prob get a 32gb class 10 at some stage.

I think the quality is great. I like the fact that when you're reviewing footage you can press pause as vehicles or signs pass by and the registration numbers etc are perfectly readable unlike other cams I've tried that just show blurred writing.

I got a cheap £30 one off eBay and it's doing the job fine for me

Already had 4-5 close calls while driving this month where the camera footage will have been very useful

Mainly people pulling out in front of me, and one particular incident involving a driver who decided to jump across 3 lanes of motorway traffic 2 seconds after joining a busy motorway in a Nissan Micra without even indicating and forcing an Audi in the third lane to brake hard as he was going a little faster then 70
