vRS building - Columbus/Amudsen

Featured Replies

So I'm building up a Mk3 as a potential replacement for my current Mk2.5

Not looking to buy now or near future - but just looking to see overall costs etc.

On my current car I had a factory fitted Columbus. I love having Sat-Nav on-tap whenever I need it and I've always found the system easy to use etc.

When looking at the Mk3 I can see that the Columbus is going to be one expensive option once more:

£1350 for the Columbus

Or £1629 for the Columbus - but comes with Colour Maxidot, Lane Assist and Light Assist

However I also see that the Amudsen is available at £550 - obviously a lot cheaper.

I know that the Amudsen has a smaller screen - that wouldn't be the end of the world. I also think that the Amudsen is also missing the hard drive.

However I'm going to assume this has been thought of and it would be possible to have both an SD card wit the maps on for the Sat-Nav and say a 32GB SD card for all my music installed at the same time?

So it's £1350 for the Columbus + £80 for the Colour Maxidot (assuming Lane Assist is of no interest to me) - £1430

Or it's £550 + 80 for the colour maxidot - £600

Obviously a major difference. Would I be losing any more than the larger screen and the ability to store music on a HD (but available from an SD card instead) by going Amudsen over Columbus?

Obviously that gives more money to spend on other options/toys.

Cheers.

Amundson is ok, loads of features and you get used to the size of the screen.

Not sure what the difference is between the mapping but the Amundsen maps are 4.5gb the Columbus is 17gb. If i do go for a mk3 i will be speccing the Columbus unit again purely personal preference though.

I do like the Columbus - and it's certainly been well used.

As I said, I'm not looking to change now (fingers crossed for a VAT free offer in the future) but maybe I'll look at everything else as toys and stick to the Columbus.

More detailed maps, DVD player with a screen that a much nicer resolution compared t the Amundsen and 5.1 audio when used with Canton upgrade.

I have the Amundsen, if I was to choose again I would go for the Columbus. Screen is significantly better and worth the extra outlay

Anyone know if there is an aftermarket add available to allow tv viewing or similar on a columbus yet

£550 to add sat nav functionality to what is already a half decent HU set up (as the bolero is physically no different except the lack of nav) is acceptable in my book; 1350 for more or less the same thing albeit with a couple of extra features ans a bit more blingy is a big ask for me.

id like columbus but i wouldnt be prepared to pay for it; much rather amundsen and canton and pocket 400 quid change.

Ive specced Columbus on my last two Skodas and its well worth the money. The 'couple of extra features' make a big difference. Just having the big hard drive in situ for the bulk of your music collection is great and then supplemented by the SD slot is the icing on the cake. Its a better quality sound output to my (and my dealers) ears is something most people don't consider and the maps themselves are more detailed. The unit itself is also quicker in use. The new Columbus has moved the game on even further imo. However, if you are budget limited then I'd agree that the lesser h/u and Canton is the way to go to ensure the best mix of h/u functionality and overall sound quality.
