Skoda won't start

Featured Replies

Hi everyone I'm looking for some help.

My 52 Plate Skoda won't start.

Here is the boring history of the problem.

It always started on the driveway but wouldnt start again once you were at your destination. If you opened the bonet then slammed it closed it seemed to resolve the problem and the car would start.

The car was serviced - timing corrected and seemed to fix the problem.

Drove the car from my office car park to a shop (about 3miles) this week and then the car refused to start. We towed it home and it actually started on the driveway. The following morning it refused to start again and hasnt started since.

What we know:

It has half a tank of petrol. It has oil. The battery is fine. Its been fully serviced in the last 6 months.

Problems: The temperature light is on. The guy who serviced it said that the sensor in the bottle was dirty or faulty but there was no problem with the bottle.

The car tries to start and either doesnt start at all or starts for a second or two and then just dies even if you rev the engine.

Hope someone can help with suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

Check the wiring to both the crank position sensor and the cam position sensor and then the sensors themselves.

Give us a clue then, 1.4 mpi, 1.4 16V, 1.2 HTP or 2.0 litre?  Is the immobiliser light on?

1.4i petrol. Immobiliser light not on.

If you have a spare key you should try using that. I assume the car doesn't stop while being driven, it only refuses to restart?

Thats right it doesnt stop once its going. Only when you try to re-start it after a journey (in general) there have been very few occasions when it hasnt started after its been sat overnight.

I will try the spare key, that's not something I thought of.

Thanks for your help.

1.4 mpi, 8 valve?, have a look at the thermostat, it may have broken up and is affecting the temperature sensor.
