best/quickest way to remove coilovers and fit different ones

Featured Replies

Lastingham time I disconnected the drive shaft but heard there's quicker ways anyone care to elaborate and gives brief walk through.

Cheers

You using the vw hub spreader tool?

Just be a case of compressing springs (if needed on coilovers) undo top mount, arb and hub bolts. Insert hub spreader and pull out.

Simples :)

8mm allen key ground down on 2 sides

Insert ground sides into hub, rotate 90 degrees and voila

brake pipe from clip / abs wire from strut
undo arb link
undo pinch bolt on hub
spread hub at rear ( chisel or special tool)
tap hub down using a block of wood and hammer

undo top mount
remove strut from wheel arch

then reverse for fitting

Remove the whole strut/hub assembly.

Big ass pry bar!

Remove the whole strut/hub assembly.

Long winded

Not really.

Yup really

Your adding in disconnecting ball joint and driveshaft for no reason! Coils are shorter so easy to remove

Not really.

Really

Really?

Yeah

Just get them out and measure.....

Quickest way? Pay someone else to do it.  :notme:

In all seriousness I did the same as what Holmesie said.

Also do the above, can be done in about 10 minutes realistically.

As Holmesie said but I don't spread the hub just spray wd40 and knock it down. Don't disconnect abs sensor either but probably worth doing. Think it took me about 20 mins a side to do my top strut mounts but that was on a ramp

i meant disconnect the wire from the strut as my abs was held to the shocker by 2 clips .

I've fitted my coilovers tonight, took plenty of pictures so will make a how to guide also.

I used spring compressors, penetrating fluid, then pushed the strut out of the hub using a bottle jack between the hub and the bottom of the spring.. Didn't bother spreading the hub..
