Non Skoda... Focus 1.8 TDCi rough running (53plate)

Featured Replies

Hello

Just looking for some advice. A friend has a 53 plate focus 1.8 TDCi.

It developed a fault where it would cut out at speed with the glow plug light flashing. - the engine can be immediately re-started and then it will be ok for a bit.

The idle is rough, however when you start the engine for the first time it runs sweetly until you rev it, then the idle goes to pot.

I have changed the cam and crank sensors as these seem common culprits, but it's still not right.

There is a small split in the intake pipe after the maf, but covering this with my finger doesn't seem to help, and it's quite small anyway.

It had a fuel filter change a couple off months ago and was ok after this for a while before the fault developed.

Any thoughts?

Phil

Best to have fault codes read.

Fuel pump is a favourite on these!!

Thanks. I have tried to read the codes but it doesn't seem to want to work with either of the readers I have access too.

By fuel pump, do you mean the electric one or the mechanical high pressure pump?

Thanks for the input!

Phil

The mechanical high pressure pump.

I looked at one last week, cut out dead. Intermitant start and rough idle when it did start.

High pressure faults logged, metal filings in fuel filter.

Might be worth checking your filter for foreign objects again.

The fuel feed seems likely since there's not much else besides fuel that causes a diesel to cut completely.

So I'd agree about the HP pump, but also check the lift pump because that's where the HP gets fuel from.
