Cheapest insurance for modified car

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm going to modify my Octavia mk2 this summer and I'm just wondering what would be the cheapest company to insure a modified car with? I'm with Elephant already but they have told me that if the increase in bhps is more than 25% they wouldn't insure it at all... So where should I go than? I was planning on going from 105bhp to 230bhp, bigger brakes, polybushes, Billstein B6 shocks, bigger exhaust, fmic, complete engine swap, different transmission... do other insurers also have so stupid restrictions or is it just Elephant ? Where do you insure your heavily modified cars and what premiums do you pay?

And just out of curiosity - what are the outcomes of not declaring the mods in case of an accident? will the insurance be void completely or will the 3rd party still work?

I dunno about prices or anything but I think if you don't tell them they just void the insurance completely and in the event of any accident they won't pay out. This is standard for any form of insurance - if they can find a loophole or way not to pay they will.

I've been with Adrian Flux for the past few years. I've found them reasonable in pricing even though I was in "claim culture" Northern Ireland.

You have to get the quote online though.

I know they REFUSE to insure most Vauxhall cars and a few other models including older BMW 3-Series to eliminate yobs.

Best look for Good Insurance cover with Modified Cars, not just Cheap.

It does not have to be expensive to get good cover with the use of a Specialist Company or a good Broker that can get you cover.

3rd party still pays out to 3rd parties,

all motor vehicles require a minimum 3rd party cover on UK roads.

but

the Insurance Underwriter will probably be recovering the cost of that from you, and all other costs,

So your insurance will be void and you are legally responsible for your actions.

That could mean paying for life for an accident you might be in.

Take the 25% limits in power upgrades etc you hear with a pinch of salt,

you need to declare everything they need to confirm in writing all that is covered.

You might well have the car expertly inspected if there was to be an accident.

Specialist Brokers like some in this forum understand exactly Modifications,

Standard Budget Companies offering Basic Insurance to standard cars is fair enough,

Supply and demand.

Most likely: No payout, 6 points, a fine and getting to declare your insurance was voided every time you try and get insurance again for the rest of your life.

just had a chat with them and they said they can't insure my car because of non standard engine swap (I will be putting 1.9 AXB engine from VW T5 in my Octavia) I'm not really impressed to be honest... I'm still waiting to hear back from Adrian Flux though

Maybe something to do with your age or similar.

I am covered with my vehicles for performance Engines swaps and pay less than £250 a year.

Plenty of Companies cover all sorts of Mods, but might well be asking you for Engineers Report',

but that is straight forward.

What sort of money do you pay for Standard Insurance cover on an Unmodified car?

I'm 30 with 12 years driving experience, 4 years no claim bonus and one not-in-fault incident in 2011, as the car was sitting in a garage recently to get sprayed and I'm going to do some work in next few weeks anyway I'm using temporary insurance for now which cost me £27 for third party and £50 for fully comp for 28 days. My other car which I'm using my no claim bonus on cost me something like £350 per year to insure...

My cars with Mods are on separate policies, gains no NCB and uses NCB.

Hopefully you should have no problem getting the suitable insurance.

Sky insurance have always come up with the best price for me.

There is no such thing as the cheapest insurance company though. Who's cheapest for one may be more expensive for another.

Totally depends on you, your car, your address etc etc etc.

I will be selling my old car once the one I'm working on is ready so NCB will be used on it

would you give me an example how much do you pay for a modified car with engine swap and who is the insurer ?

Premium Choice mostly used for many years, before they were Road Sure.,

different underwriters for different cars, and i pay no more than £250 for any type of tuned vehicle,

but that is limiting annual mileage,

No Commuting etc, and Declared Mods, Pictures provided, receipts available & 'Agreed Values'.

You buy the type of insurance required and never having to claim does make a difference, being old helps as well.

Always declare the mods and search around the brokers for the best deal on anything non-standard. On this one the bhp increase exceeds 100 so it's too tasty for us but I reckon Tony @ Greenlight will be able to help.

Feel free to get in touch, we specialise in modified car insurance and offer discounts to Briskoda members.

just did not very different from A Flux I'm afraid

The price will be representative of the risk..

I think less than £600 for such a heavily modified car is a very good quote.  Insurance for properly sesigned high performance cars are expensive and what you are talking about is effectively a DIY mystery bag, with none of the research carried out by manufactuers to make sure that the brakes etc can cope with the power.

Sounds cheap enough. How much would you be paying for a std VRS for example.
