Das Auto: The Germans, their cars and us,,,,,,,,,

Featured Replies

Documentary about the German car industry, straight after Top Gear Sunday 4th August 9pm.

...or the rest of the country for that matter.  There were motions to break it up entirely.

That poll that was conducted, where the top 3 cars people aspired to own were all German............I wonder where the likes of Skoda and Seat came?

And the white Merc in the next scene? Illegally spaced number plates

Just tried watching it but couldn't manage it all. What a load of none sense! Yeah the companies may be owned by German, Indian or japanese nationals/companies but they are still made in Britain by British people using British materials. Plus couldn't take that fat idiot seriously, he couldn't even look directly at the camera, his head was constantly facing away. and who is Stephen Bayley the so called design critic? Wearing a turtle neck, seriously?! The whole show was utter tosh and I turned it off after 32 minutes.

:D

He did lose a bit of credibility in my mind when he said "We did still make good cars, like this Morris Minor".  :wonder:

.

Only 'some' British materials are used and 'some' British workers employed, but more importantly you missed out........ "with German or Japanese management ideals". It just wouldn't be cricket to take all the praise now, would it. ;)

Really not sure what direction he's facing has to do with anything, that would be down to the director I think, and I fail to see how a  persons choice of clothing has anything to do with their commentary. [just re-watched it, he's almost constantly looking directly into the camera]

I found it quite interesting to be honest. The last ten minutes of Top Gear showed how much is still designed and made in Britain. We have the talent, the engineers, the visionaries and the work force. Unfortunately at one time we also had the shop stewards and the sheep who followed them who downed tools if somebody without a qualification in electrical engineering changed a light bulb.

As Gadgetman said, it's the unions that killed the British car industry.

I'm sure he speaks highly of you too.

I've taped this, not watched it yet but Bayley can talk some sense, he certainly did last week regarding housing.

No. Nooooooooooo, I won't have that. New Years Eve 1997, a Moggy and a bottle of Asti. Brilliant.

Still no reply? Can't reply or won't reply?

Finally got round to watching this today, and the crux of it is poor management, crap cars and the unions killed British Leyland.  Germans started building crap cars, put in the effort and the unions worked with management for the good of the company and their own prospects.

Cant help thinking we should have similar union laws here. Might help turn around the country and have stopped the manufacturing and coal decline.

What was the name of this programme? I don't have a telly but I'll have to try and sponge off you license payers and watch it for free on iplayer...

I liked the short quote from a BMW salesman from the 80's when asked about the german brands and who drove them ...it went something like...

Mercedes are for company secretaries

Audi drivers aspire to drive a Mercedes. Ouch

I only watched it today but I thought it was good. Certainly it presented the topic in a favourable manner that could be watched by all, not just car fans. I think he was a little critical of BL products and the Princess particularly - they were good and clever cars in their day; just poorly put together.

As said above a combination of poor management and too strong unions killed the industry. I'd never really considered the idea of arrogance as a nation during the 20th century, but thinking about it, it does make sense.

FUN FUN FUN ON DAS AUTOBAHN.

Not to be racist, as Germans can be lovely people, I love all of Central, North, East and West Europe and every place else.

but i would rather live in the UK, and be able to buy cars from what ever country i chose.

Seems to be little restriction on what is available here in the way of vehicles.

I prefer the UK weather, roads, Governments, & ability while we can to snub some of the EU's rules and ridiculous Regulations.

We are allowed to go visit Mainland Europe and then come home again.

Seems like we have it all here, even if the UK Car Industry was a bit rubbish in the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's. 2000's

We do have some lovely British built cars from those periods.

Funnily people want to keep coming here and having things built.

They also want to live here rather than in their wunderbar Homelands..
