00778 - Steering angle sensor problem

Mark 1, 02-plate 4x4 Octavia.  I've recently developed fault 00778 with the steering angle sensor.  VCDS says simply "no communications", however the display in measuring blocks four of the ABS controller looks entirely plausible (ie 0 at straight ahead, 180ish for a half turn etc etc).  Compared to the other measurements in this block, however, the steering angle sensor reading does seem to update a bit more slowly, every second or two rather than a few times per second like the others especially in "turbo" mode.

 

Despite having a plausible reading, the fault doesn't clear and the "ESP" light stays permanently illuminated on the dash.

 

Any ideas?

Background info:

 

 

1) I've seen references to the ignition switch on the Internet.  I did have this out a couple of years ago - what specifically should I be checking?

 

2) The alternator cable harness was recently changed.  I'm fairly sure it's done correctly but, as well as the main current-carrying cable, there are three multipin connectors.  The four-pin one which goes into the loom near the battery is definitely correct  The other two two-pin ones (one to the regulator on the alternator, not sure about the other…?) I haven't been able to check.  Is it possible to plug these in the wrong way 'round??

 

3) I've no idea about the codings on these controllers, I suspect some might have been changed before I got the car, so a 2nd opinion would be gratefully received.
