Is it called hunting?

Featured Replies

Now got 70 miles on the Rapid,  and a couple of questions have appeared in my head.

Car is 1.6 TD 105 PS.  Will the drive smooth out as the car runs in?  what I mean is it is not smooth. On the transition from power on to power off there is a definite tremble, judderette, miniture lurch.  Same  but not as bad  with power  off to power on.  Driving very slowly in a just moving traffic jam it is very un-smooth compared with the Octavia.which just slowed right down and picked up and slowed down in a totally smooth manner.  I've also noticed that approaching a tail back for example the car still pulls even with my foot off thr throttle.  As thogh someone else has their foot of the pedal.

Is it 'cos the engine is tight?

Another difference --I often have to park underground and climb the ramp with no real run up. The Octy just climbed it from a little over tick-over and increased speed.as it went up.

The Rapid did not like it at all and I had to "rescue" it by a spot of clutch slipping.till it got the hang of what was wanted.   Is this the difference between 1.9 and 1.6 or PD versus Common rail or because the engine is stiff.   It has occurred to me that until the turbo gets going it is a puny 1.6 compared with a meatier 1.9.

Third odd thing. Drive to end of queue at junction. Put it in neutral engine revs at 1000 rpm for between 4 and 10 seconds before dropping to 850 if hold up is longer than 10 secopnds.   Thought it was Air con causing it but no difference on or off.  1000 revs is a bit intrusive and wastes my derv.

It is almost as if it has got a sluggish auto choke on a cold morning.  Is this normal or  a result of a stiff engine

Your advice will be welcome and may stop a visit to the dealer. I really hope I've not got myself a lemon.  Early days.  Time will tell.  Give it a chance.  Etc

Same engine as I have and mine has been smoooooooth from day 1.  Only slight exception is on cruise control.  If I accelerate to overtake on the motorway and then release the throttle to drop back to cruise control speed then as the speed is approached there is just a little "shall I, shan't I" with the power and it is just a little lumpy as it settles down.

Someone else's foot on the throttle? If you let the speed drop so you are in too high a gear - ie revs go below 1000, then the anti-stall kicks in and you will feel acceleration as it maintains 1000rpm.  Your gearchange indicator should be recommending a change-down.

I had a 1.9TDi a couple of cars ago.  The 1.6 does not have the low down grunt of the 1.9.  I notice it leaving my steep drive in the morning.

If you drop it into neutral or dip the clutch while still moving, the engine maintains 1000rpm to provide assistance to braking.  It should drop to 800 or so when you come to a complete stop.

70 miles is early days!  Mine has done 2300 now and I am getting used to its little quirks.
