Mileage - What's it Really Worth?

Featured Replies

I must admit the tsi engine is tempting for performance and lower purchase price but with 31mpg I'd may as well keep the vRS.

IMO It seldom makes financial sense to change a car in order to save on fuel economy. The "cost to change" will often absorb any fuel savings.

Saying that I've owned x2 1.8 TSi's (x1 2WD and x1 4WD) and have driven numerous 2 and 4WD diesel Octavias / Yetis's and Superb's and the TSi unit is miles ahead in terms of driveability, NVH etc. The only downside is -20% fuel economy, failing timing chain tensionsers and an occasional propensity for oil

I currently have both a 4WD petrol and 2WD Diesel and my Fuelly account tells me the petrol costs 8p / mile more and does 16mpg less (28 vs 44).

Yes you're right about changing a car for fuel economy to be a bad idea. But currently we don't use the Octavia much, particularly for the long journeys which it is suited to, because it costs so much to fuel. So we are paying for a car that we're actively trying not to use. Doesn't make sense does it?
