more power?

Featured Replies

Hi all I no people will be sayin get a vrs but how can I get more power for my 1.4 8v fabia comfort, its abit sluggish with my vrs alloys on only hitting 90ish foot to the floor..... I'm no racer at all but would love just some more power to add..

Thanks Sean.

It doesn't do you many favours talking about speeding on the roads on this site....

and yes, the most concise advice I could give you is go and buy a faster car, or do an engine transplant.

Get yourself some go faster stripes, that will make it more streamline and will easy do 120mph. On a serious note you simply can't add anything to it to make it faster and why do you need to do 90mph? What's wrong with 70? Looking at your name (94) ill take a shot and say your 18? Get yourself some no claims, then get a VRS.

Easy, just do what this bloke did!

I'm 19 got 1 years no claims and I done 90 on an private drag road just to see what I could get... I can't afford vrs or transplant but thought maybe some exhaust system or something may give it a little life

An exhaust probably would but you wouldn't gain sweet FA out of it. The amount of money you want to spend on it you could simply put to one side. I'm in the exact same boat as yourself, I'm 22 years old, 1 years no claims, and have a 1.4mpi. I could go out and buy a VRS today but the insurance is just too much, my spends would be gone in no time. I'm running mine to the ground getting my no claims up then getting a VRS.

Yeah thats wat I would like to do in a few years is get a vrs atm im just making my fabia tidy go to a few meets, it's my second Car and I've driven other cars but this is a sweet fabia just need bit more something when I'm overtaking and some idiot decides to speed up

Yeah that's infuriating when people speed up as you overtake, there was another thread on here about that same subject only a few days ago..

I think all has been said already on power upgrades tbh, there's not a great deal you can do other than bolt on goodies like exhaust systems and the like, but in reality they don't add any power or speed, they will just make it noisier, the extra 3bhp you might gain doesn't make your vision go all blurry like on that fast and furious film... But the most important thing of all is that modifications must be declared to your insurer, at your age this will more than likely make it prohibitive because they just simply won't insure you, it's hard enough (and expensive) for experienced drivers to obtain modified car insurance let alone a nipper.

I'm not trying to be condescending by saying all this, but myself I have a modded Audi s4 with 2 stinking great turbos dangling off the sides that will wipe the floor with any porsche going, but the caveat to this is it costs me 3 grand a year to insure even with 9 years no claims discount, and it only comes out a handfull of times a year on a strictly limited mileage policy.

You might check out tuning possibilities in the Felicia forums. After all the 1.4 Mpi is an old Skoda engine.

Nitrous oxide could help in those overtaking situations

Engine probably won't last long though.

Thanks for replying guys well can I get a panel filter for my fabia? K&n or something? Seen a few people saying there getting it for there vrs?

You can probably put anything that goes into a VRS into your car aswell, but the VRS would gain on it.

normal tuning will help a little- so breathing mods such as filter/exhuast etc

but often the gains will be quite low and tbh a little placebo because your car will sound faster even if it isn't really!

Been in same boat with my polo 1.4 8v ended up selling it, at a loss to how much I put into her, stick some coil overs on, drop it to the deck , low and slow mate ;)

My friend had a mk1 golf with twin Webber carbs and coil overs and it was only a 1.1 it kept with a mini 1275gt and on country lanes nothing kept with it! It's not all about speed, it's skill of the driver in the tight bends :) !

With this sort of car I think it's best to bask in its sub 70hp engine and just do nothing.  Learn to use it how it can be used, and adapt the driving to suit.  Wait for that time when you get something with a bit more poke.  The 100hp 16v engines are pretty good if you can find a fabia with that in.  Pretty much as cheap as the 8v too now.

Unfortunately, there's little to be done, and anything that adds a reasonable boost in performance is likely to hit you badly with insurance.

I second Jason's suggestion to leave the power be for the time being.

In the handling dept, usual first suggestion is to add a RARB. As a younger/newer driver that advice might be questionable. If you do get one, get the Whiteline and put it on the mildest setting initially.

Other thing.... Remove the VRS alloys. :( Find some Skoda 14s or 15s that look reasonable and buy tyres with decent modern sidewalls like Contis, Pirellis, Bridgestones... They'll be cheaper in smaller sizes, ride/handle better than cheaper/budget tyres and you'll probably get some MPG and MPH back by running lighter/narrower wheels and tyres.

Ultimately only way to get more performance is to add power or lose weight. With the best will in the world though, a Fabia's a portly beast.

Simplify and add lightness. Stick on smaller and lighter wheel as has already been suggested and put decent rubber on. Improve the handling if you can and learn to get the most out of it. All the fun is in the corners anyway so think more about good lines and reading the road far ahead. This makes journeys far more enjoyable. OK you can't overtake much in it but don't worry about it. Just concentrate on improving your own driving then when you do get a faster car you'll really appreciate the upgrade,
