Featured Replies

hi guys had car from savillesoctavia estate 10 plate a week a go did have test drive long story anyway

started to drive stared to hear a noise from the back sounds like a bearing gone

so rang savilles told them the problem mark said its the tyres i said tyres its sounds

like bearing noise taken it this morning test drive and its the tyres its a common

problem with the estates hers got a 62 plate estate company car and that the same nosie

so i just a to live with it or he said try a softer compond tyre they put new tyres on

the front so i was going to put them on the back to try them but before this was going to buy

some 17s for it and told him and he that might help it being a small tyre

so as anybody had the same problem as me thamks pete

It needs a four wheel alignment on a Hunter setup. The rear suspension geometry will be out, very common issue with Octavia's.

does anybody else have this problem on estates would like to now

It's a common issue on All octavias.

What tyres do you currently have, as some brands are terrible for sawtoothing even with correct alignment due to the suspension setup VAG use

Yup, its most likely the tyres.  Not that skodas don't ever have wheel bearing troubles, but tyres is much more common.

As everyone else has suggested, get the vehicle 4 wheel aligned.  It will drive better, steer and brake better, and mine improved the fuel consumption too.

I have found Hankook Ventus on 17" rims pretty quiet, grippy and until now - about 30,000 miles resistant to sawtoothing.

mine estate has got dunlop sport tyres the garage have just put two new tyres on the front so if i have the alignment on 4 wheels which it will cost about 70.00 quid

and only if i do change the tyres wots the best tyres to put on it you just can't get your head around it this problem i think its skodas fault

Check your bearings anyway. My estate developed a noise from the back end earlier in the year, I was a bit surprised since it'd had a four wheel alignment not that long ago. Turned out it was the rear offside wheel bearing. So, check them, if one seizes solid you'll be in trouble.

sorry for all questions but wot sort of miles has your car done and wot year is it also does this trouble happen on the vrs models

i spoke to a sales man a hers had no nosie of his vrs i was thinking that they have 18s on them

so you mite have less nosie with a smaller tyre i don't now see about 4 alignment will cost 60.00 plus vat

mite have it in a couple of weeks

I can't make out much of what you're saying.  Could you use a spell check?

It's sort of a design fault, or at least, VAG choose to set them up to be "safe".  The original fit Bridgestones/Dunlops seem to be worse in my experience.

My estate has 17" wheels, and did it just like most of the others.

Do the 4 wheel alignment - by someone who knows what they are doing, not kwikfit or halfords.  Last time I went to the wheel place in Ibstock.

I have been very surprised and impressed by the Hankook ventus evo2's. Nice and grippy, good steering feel and quiet.   I even bought a second pair when the original rear dunlops became intolerable.  Looking to replace a set, most likely Hankooks again.  Been quoted £90 complete per wheel.

Others have different opinions.  Falken, Khumo and recently the Goodyear F1's have acheived a following.

Hi, no problem about questions - you'll never know unless you ask   My car had done just over 116,000 miles when the rear offside bearing gave up, it was first used in Feb 2007. I'm running Goodyear EfficientGrip 205/55 R16 tyres now, don't know how long they will last, but they are reasonably quiet and give a decent smooth journey - maybe you'd prefer something a bit better on a vRS though. Go for the four-wheel alignment, but as others have said, go to someone with a good reputation. I think your car will have electric power steering too and it is important that the steering wheel alignment (and steering sensor) are in the correct position when the alignment is done if you don't want your car to feel as if steers like a forklift  ask them just to do a quick check on the bearings when they're at it. Once your car is sorted up properly you'll enjoy it more.

Dunlops are terrible for sawtoothing.  The new tyres should have gone on the rear, which will remove most of the problem.

Octavia's dont like Dunlops or Bridgestones.

thats wots on my car dunlops savilles have put two new tyres on the front so will it be better with new tyres on the back.

the back have 4.5 of tread left on them but i am thinking of putting 17s alloys on it. do you think this will do the trick

or if not wots the best rounder tyre to put on. this is doing my head in all the skodas ive had never had this trouble before

Try putting the new tyres on the rear.

Is there a reason you went for Dunlops?

they was on when i had the car from savilles and they put the new dunlops on the front so wot tyres his everybody puting on there

estate or cars going to loge tyre to put the new ones on the back today thanks guys let you how i get on

My advice, for what it's worth...

I bought my octy, noticed the noise and as it was my first estate, checked on here for some good gen. Had the Hunter alignment done. Swapped the fronts to the back. No joy. Citroen garage where i bought the car said "It's an estate! That's what they do!!" But no with only 40k on the clock it was a bearing. Always worth a check.

ok i will do the same then if its till there will ring the garage and tell to check the bearing and see wot they say
