odd noise at motorway speeds

Featured Replies

Hey all,

Have a 10 plate VRS that when driven at motorway what can only be described as a 'droning' noise can be heard.. It does not happen when town driving but only when at higher speeds. I originally thought it was coming from the engine but couldnt be too sure. I later noticed it would happen at 50mph if windy so then considered wind noise but really struggling to pin point / identify where it is coming from.

Have rung my local Skoda dealer hoping to speak with a mechanic/technician but still waiting for them to call me back

Anyone had similar of can suggest what to do?

Could it be tyre noise? I know a lot of people have complained about that.

That's about the only thing I hear (fortunately). Otherwise it's a very quiet car.

Either sawtoothed rear tyres or a wheel bearing

Sawtoothed tyres.

It happens so often on this platform. Take a rear wheel off and run your hand round the tread on the inner edge, bet it isn't smooth more like a 50p piece.

yes ive just been to savilles for the same thing he said its tyres i said tyres sounds like a rear bearing they taken it out for test drive

and said tyres thers got a company car and i drive that and thats the same he told me to try a softer tyre brand or you just got to live with it

he said its common with octavias estate a chap said on here to have a 4 wheel alignment its common for octavias

if you here from your dealer will you let me now wot they say thanks pete

Throughout most of the life of my Estate 1.4 DSG, I have suffered a weird moaning noise from what seems to be the front N/S. It's not sawtoothing. I've had that issue at the back and that's a constant wheel bearing type noise which increases/decreases with speed as you'd expect.

It's also not related to the type of tyre. I've got low rolling resistance ones now unlike the original tyres (when I suffered exactly the same noise).

It starts at about 65-70 and its more likely to happen in warm weather. It's a completely constant pitch - not speed related at all. I'm beginning to think that it's some form of wind related issue (not personally - the car...). A VW specialist is going drive it (lets hope it makes the noise - it doesnt always) and then stick it on a ramp on Tuesday to see if there's anything likely to howl in the wind.

It's driving me nuts. I know there's nothing physically wrong with the car.

Report next week.

same with me. my mate said as long as its safe you can live with the nosie but you still need to find wots causing the nosie mine starts at about

and ive got this problem you can't get your head round it i hope some one here on find the problem

the plastic under engine tray, ?   loose and vibrating when speed is applied

Hi,

This thread may be of some value: Link

Its seems to be a know fault with a dealer fix. See the thread for the item number to quote to dealers.

I get a mild howling noise at 80-ish and need to get around to asking my local dealer about this fix.

I also get more "road noise" at about 30 mph, I have so far put it down a tyre issue.

Hope that helps mate.

Mines in for hunter realign next week as rear tyres are scrubbing.

Exactly the same noise as a wheel bearing.

does this happen on the cars aswell as the estates ringing a place up to day to see when i get mine in for this alignment

then see wot can do about my tyres mine are about 4.5 on sofare. did think about putting the new fronts on the back and see wot happens

you just can't grasp why it happens can you would like to people get on with  there cars thanks pete

If it's more of a whistling type noise then it's definitely like Surrey Ocy says. I had my front grille replaced after a bird strike and ever since I had that noise. Only at motorway speeds, only in warmer weather and sometimes dependent on wind speed and direction.

My dealer couldn't work out what it was and only after someone checked that I'd had a new grille recently did they think that was the problem. Apparently newer grilles are a slightly different size and so need a thicker felt tape to bung up a gap. Sorted now though and the noise has gone.

OK so I spent much of today with a roll of tank tape covering the radiator grille in various different ways (inside and out). Taped over door shut lines, window seals, everything. Completely covered the lower grille. Took off the undertray (which was securely fastened). Changed to winter wheels and tyres.

Made absolutely no difference whatsoever. On comes the drone at 65 mph. Every time.

Crikey I hope the VW chappy has got some ideas.
