Hi guys I'm asking on behalf of a friend who is looking at bying a 1.8 20v turbo. The question that has been asked/argued alot is I know some engines have just forged crank standard and some have sort of forged pistons and rods standard but which ones? I know the BAM does but not sure in the others. Any help would be great. Thanks

AFAIK. Its only the bam with the forged guts.

Possibly the 210 hp 1.8t as well not sure though

pretty much all vw crankshafts are forged as standard, and so are the connecting rods too, the pistons are a hypereutectic pressure cast piston rather than using machined forged blanks in most cases, it's only the super high perfomance stuff that used forged pistons because they are a lot noisier because of the increased running clearnances used
