Not sure if a piece / flap is supposed to be at the back of the air intake?

It seems that there is a hinge cutout where a flap might sit, is it there on anyone else's, has mine fell off?

Nope, your is exactly the same as mine.

 

presumably so rain / large items pass straight through instead of heading straight to the air filter!

Yup my BKD is the same.

Does that bit sit butted up to the slam panel/behind the radiator grille? I only ask because on my TFSi version I noticed that there was a flap/lid missing from the top of the intake assembly in that area & sourced a replacement from the local dealer for a few quid.

 

I appreciate that it's likely to be different for the TDi but the piece you're holding up in the photo does look similar.. :wonder:
