Sticky valve?

Featured Replies

Anyone come across this on an PD130 engine? ('06 plate, fabia vRS with 120k miles)

We initially swapped the injector loom as it appeared to be a common fault but the car is continuing to have no power, very jerky and sounds like something is very wrong at 3k rpm (but below that sound normal strangely)

The lads in the garage had it this afternoon (dads friend = trusted guy) and he thinks we might have a sticking valve.

My question really is aimed at trying to help the lads find out my problem rather than not trusting them. Temp solution is to add an additive to the oil and fuel and run it gently around until it either goes bang OR free's up which they are hoping is the more likely solution.

not sure on the sticking valve?

is there any smoke or visible signs at around the 3k mark when shes playing up?

More so under load, thick black diesel smoke like you would get if a car hasn't been booted for a while (diesel)

i think id be tempted to start off by cleaning turbo and  giving air filter a tap out to make sure the engine can breathe properly .... its a cheap and easyish place to start

sorry, what's this?

Sounds like the cam lobe worn down, pretty common on the pd engine and hard to spot without removing the injection rocker shaft first.

I wouldn't run it with a suspect sticky valve as if it is then it Will be hitting the piston ( doubt it is a sticky valve tho )

As above.. I'd put more money on it being a worn cam than a sticky valve.

The strange thing is that last Thursday I driven home from work with no hint if a problem, fired it up on Friday morning to head back to work and instantly felt something wasn't right.

Would a cam simply stop running correctly? If it was worn I would have thought that I would have started to see an old problem prior to this.

Whilst typing this though I have had a ticking sound like it had no oil for a while BUT the oil was correct on the dip stick (multiple checks at both cold and warm)

yes it works fine until the follower wears thru and then it can no longer open the valve properly, this will happen all of a sudden so quite possible to park up and then find it's not right next time it is started.

Thanks, I'll speak to my dad tonight when I go to pick it up. Does this require the head to come off? (Forgive my lack of knowledge here guys!)

Just googled, it looks like it does.

Balls

no need to remove the head for the cam change mate, it is an afternoons work by the time you have fitted the followers and new cam bearings etc, plenty of kits around for under £200 including followers and cam bearings .
