Basically just to play music off a USB flash drive, is it possible??

Yes, you'd nee one of these, it replaces the cd changer.

That's the only thing I can think of.

IMHO you'd be better off getting a new head unit, you can get some pretty decent ones for a reasonable price and the sound quality will be 100 times better than the Symphony unit.
