06 petrol vrs engine noise

can any help me got a noise ,it sounds like cam chain rattle.

ive had it checked out and bin told its the cam shaft variator.

is this a common fault, will it get any worse ,will it brake and damage the engine.

is it a big job to change and replace.or is it something else.

my mates vrs has started making the noise as well.
