360 sound issue

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've recently swapped out the projector I was using in favour of a proper LED TV - the noise and heat from the projector was too annoying. I've also replaced my aging surround sound at roughly the same time, both Panasonic Veria items.

I went to play on my 360 the other day, so plugged it all in via the component cables (it's too old for HDMI, the one downstairs with HDMI has a dead disk tray, so is used for iPlayer/Netflix etc), and used an optical cable for the sound. The old surround sound didn't have optical in, so it's the first time I've done this.

I fired it up, and it POSTed and did the 'woosh' noise as it turns on, all good so far. Once it's got past that and loaded to the dashboard/games, there's no more sound. If I plug the audio phono leads into the TV and use the ARC option on the sound system it works fine, so it's not that the 360 isn't making any noise. I know it's not the cable as it works when carrying sound from the TV. Likewise I know it's wired in properly (not that it's hard to figure out) as it makes noises when POSTing.

Anyone got any ideas as to where my optical sound is disappearing too?

Cheers!

Joe

I use both optical and component for mine.

Have red and yellow leads plugged into the tv for 'normal use' and the optical cable into my surround sound for when I feel like annoying the neighbours.

I'd imagine its something wrong with the digital optical settings in the Xbox and those accepted by your surround sound.

Id imagine the whoosh is essentially 'per-start up' so avoids any settings changes made hence the fact your can here it.

Found this on the Xbox support site

Configure the console audio settings

Note The steps below might differ depending on the type of cable that you use on your console and the audio receiver or the output device that you use.

Start the Xbox 360 console without a disc in the disc tray.

Go to Settings and select System.

Select Console Settings, and then select Audio.

Select Digital Output, and then select the digital output used by your audio system:

Digital Stereo

Dolby Digital 5.1

Dolby Digital with WMA Pro: This setting enables WMA Pro pass-through if your receiver supports the WMA Pro format.

Potentially change the settings and see if that helps...

Cheers. I did look at that page, but didn't listen/comprehend clearly!

Setting it to digital stereo got it to work. :) Makes you wonder what the point is when I could get stereo from the phono leads, but hey-ho!
