Superb, Octavia 3 or Audi A6?

Featured Replies

I have narrowed my list down to the above and would be interested to hear if you have gone from an A6 to the Superb / Octavia 3 etc please.

I have looked at the Octavia 3 Estate Elegance on 0% but with extras like Columbus, heated seats, Xenons the price jumps up. The Audi A6 Avant seems to have good second hand ex demo deals around for similar money. The 170 DSG Superb Estates for around 18-19k on 8.9% Skoda PCP again looks like ex demos 4 to 8k on the clock which is great value.

The Superb is at the top of the list followed by the A6.

I don't have to have DSG but after driving one recently I really like them.

Swings and roundabouts with the 0% Octavia offer compared to the 8.9% as the Octavia is based on list price compared to depreciation offsetting the interest on the Superb. The A6 offer is in the middle with 4.6% apr and free servicing for 2 years.

What sort of average mpg do you see on the 170 CR DSG  and is it reliable?

Many thanks

my11 170dsg superb elegance 31000 miles no problems at all and averaged 48 mpg

The Octavia is likely to depreciate the most heavily and being a very new model, decent discounts are hard to obtain. There is a good case for the Audi in that there will be a lot of well cared for ex fleet cars and the sheer number of them means there's a lot to choose from. The Superb is a lovely car -for me it would have to be fully loaded with all the extras (probably L&K) and you should be able to get 3 years servicing, but isn't 8.9% on the high side?

I personally wouldn't go for the Audi on grounds of the sort of person that drives them, despite it possibly offering the most bang for the buck

We have an A6 and a Superb (twin door 170 4x4). I am impressed with the Superb, in particular he space and the clever boot. I have to say the A6 is slightly better in most ways. It has a slightly better feel to all of the knobs and buttons and is a bit better to drive. All of these differences are very small on their own, but if you are comparing side by side they are there.

All in all the fact that the Audi is only a bit better is a massive credit to Skoda as it is supposed to be the premium brand in the group and get first dibs on the new components. The real benefit for the Skoda is the value to provides, so I'd be surprised if you can get a similarly equiped a6 for the price of a superb. IMHO the Superb blows the socks off the comparable VW Passat.

Not sure if having a Skoda balances out the character flaw of having an a6? :^)

Thank you very much for all your feedback.

I have already discounted the Passat as it seemed to offer poor value spec vs price compared to the Superb.

The A6 Avant ex demo is £26500 (5k and about 5 months old) - sat nav, leather on the SE spec. The Superb I have seen is 19k , 8 months old and with 12k miles. The Skoda finance 8.9 does seem high as it is double the Audi offer and it all comes from VW finance! Perhaps there will be room on the deal to offset the interest. I am self employed so part of the costs can be reclaimed and I do like the idea that the Superb has already lost about 7k.

This is interesting - webuyanycar would buy the Superb above for 17k so only 2k difference. However, on the Audi they would offer 18620 - 8k difference! Would that be due to the sheer number of Audi A6 on the market?

Looking at used A6 Avants on Audi's website there's some nice looking cars on there for less than that £24k ish. I would be inclined to agree that there are a lot of them on the market which will affect the webuyanycar valuation

Of course not everyone who drives an Audi is a tailgating aggressive driver, but unfortunately it does seem to be the brand of choice for that sort of person at the moment @ sjdavies47 I'm sure you're not in that camp :)

Look at the Orange Wheels website. You can get around £8k off a brand new A6.

...and the Audi A6 came in at 68th!

I know where my hard earned would be going.

silver1011, many thanks for the link!

The Superb is already at the top of my list and hopefully I can buy one within the next few weeks.

I was looking at an A6 evant having decided against most other estates. Our budget was £22 ish k. My research then raised the issue of the Superb, this car had to replace a Discovery 2 and compensate for the loss of my drop top ( SWMBO retained hers).

Our requirements were space ( lots of it), reliability, good depreciation and something whose looks we could live with. I read everything I could on all the forums and websites. It took me three visits to the Skoda showrooms before I fessed up I was interested. Got salesmen looking for an Elegance Estate with a sunroof and DSG to no avail.

We then found the L&K demonstrator we bought (another 3k on our budget). I loved it and she preferred the brown leather to black!

We bought it and love it. Go on the Audi site and spec an A4 or A6 to L&K levels and look at the cost.

I'm a Skoda convert -big time.

There is a reason why the Skoda Superb came top of the list in JD Power's 2013 survey...

Probably because a Skoda owner fills in the form and the Audi one doesn't and simply puts the car in for work and says let me know what the bill is,

I don't give with these awards, it's like car of the year, all it is is promotional, granted the Superb should be near the top anyway but so should the Avensis, it's all Mori Poll if you look at it logically.

Why would a Superb be 1st and an A6 68th, basically the same car different shape, I think all it means is the A6 doesn't care what others think and doesn't have time to worry about filling in silly questionaires about their car.

Spoken like a true cynic.

Disagree. Much as I think the Superb is an ace car, I believe Superbia's view of survey results has more than an element of truth. Trouble is, as Skoda fans, we can easily fall into the trap of hearing what we want to be the truth.

I suggest you take a closer look at how the survey is conducted and the responses evaluated.

The number of responses has no effect on the results.

And, I'd also argue that the brand-conscious Audi driver cares more about what others think of him and his car than any unpretentious Skoda driver.

So how does something like a Peugeot win these awards then?

An Audi driver is normally someone whose doing ok in life and has more things to keep him busy than filling in questionaires, Toyota cars should always be near the top as their dealers in my experience actually do give a fig about you and that's half the battle imo,

Like Kev said a Skoda driver can get swept away with the euphoria of I bought a Skoda in the same way a teenie ouzes about the latest boy bander and especially if it's their first Skoda having just joined the "elite" of the "smart money", which I'm afraid unless you buy new when Skoda have a no vat offer on left the building quite some time ago as they are no longer the cheap kid and have built a deserved reputation for good cars that are now embarrasing the parent company.

You lost me on that last sentence (paragraph) there, mate.

You lost me on that last sentence (paragraph) there, mate.

Basically those on their 1st ever Skoda can get caught up in the self congratulating thing and will be full of unbreakable placebo effect towards the car,

And the car is no longer a cheap option unless you get it new on an offer, second hand an Octavia is more than a B7 Passat, and the Superb combi well we won't even go there for prices.

My point on this is to treat surveys with a certain amount of scepticism. They may have some value but look behind the headline results rather than just accepting scores as "facts".

Treat them as you should treat school league tables. ie: one piece of information that may support other pieces of information prior to reaching a conclusion.

Back on subject..................I'd have the Superb. Great car, and even better in pre facelift trim.

There are some excellent deals on Audi A6s with less than 10k miles. I missed out on one with plenty of options recently. A £37k car for under £24k. They certainly feel more special than either Skoda and are well worth a look.

You should point out that that is only for diesel. Petrol models are far more expensive...perhaps because of their rarity

Audi are really pushing the A6 deals. I have been offered a new one cheaper than the used selection due to dealer and Audi contributions plus other incentives to move brands . Not much between the finance monthly either. Final value on PCP is stonger for the Audi helping offset the interest and slightly higher monthly cost (about £50pm).

Saying that there is still something that is pulling me towards the Superb with 10k off list price ok used but great value.

The JD Power Survey uses completed surveys to establish the ranking, the very fact that the A6 is included means that (a minimum of 50) owners have completed the survey.

I don't understand the 'an Audi driver is less likely to fill in the survey than a Skoda driver' claim. I'd fill in the survey whether I drove an Audi or Skoda (I too looked at the A6 before buying the Superb). There are too many variables to make a such a sweeping comment.

I agree all survey results should be taken with a pinch of salt but the huge variation between the A6 and the Superb can't be ignored.

I decided against the A6 as like for like the Superb was much better specced and in my eyes better value for money.

Get the Superb - far more toys as standard on the elegance: like the brilliant adaptive cornering xenons.

Many thanks for your help.

Bit of a curve ball and looked at the 1.6CR  - I have been comparing the Octavia 3 and the new Superb facelift estates in Elegance specs.

The Octavia estate is £21890 but then I would add Columbus, Xenons, Full leather (inc heated front seats) and electric seats/folding mirrors etc (Just easier with short wife and tall husband!) This totals 25040 excluding met paint.

The new Superb has all the above in the greenline elegance and comes out at £25245! £205 more for the Superb over the Octavia same spec!

I really don't mind the 1.6 as I have been inpressed with this anyway and it would also lower the road tax and probably insurance costs too.

Another thing, if I went for the 19k 170 dsg ok different beast but the finance was working out at 323 compared to 310 on 0% and free servicing plus new car with new car smell!

I think I have made my decision - greenline elegance Superb estate.

Interesting or have I been analysing things too much? Have I missed something here?
