18"s on a fun ?

Featured Replies

can any one help me please

just trying to get my fun sorted, now it is MOT`d, and want to change the wheels

does any one know of a set of 18" wheels will be ok (not hitting the arches etc).. assuming the stud holes are 70mm as are my standard wheels

they have very low profile tyres

the fun has standard suspension

if not , what is the largest size that will fit

cheers fellas

Keith.............. Palm Court Hotel

Hi Keith, personally I wouldn't go bigger than a 15" wheel otherwise the handling is affected quite badly, I can't think of anybody who has successfully fitted 18" wheels on a felly, there have Ben folk that have tried but the consensus is that it makes it a nightmare to drive.

cheers for that chap

15`s it`ll be then

just want to get things sorted for end of the month when i tax and insure it

From what I've seen up to 15's look about right on the pick ups & could well imagine handling could be affected above that!

So many owners seem to go for an instant wheel change but over time I've grown to like the 13s & the coordinated look ;)

Indeed. Each to their own, but I have seen several with some fairly awful wheel changes. (Personally I think silver alloys look stupid on a Fun) Not sure about everyone else, but I can't see the wheels on my truck when I'm driving it. As long as they hold the tyres to the car I'm happy. ;) ;)

If I were ever to change, I think I'd have to get them re-done in back or yellow. (or black with a yellow edge)

Fun PCD is 4x100

I had 16s on mine with no adverse effects but they were quite narrow.

Yep I've seen some shockers & also white doesn't work for me!

A while back saw some lovely black alloys with a ribbon thin yellow edge but were well above my budget at the time!

At least with 13s the tyres tend to be quite cheap ;)

yes that's what I meant really, generally speaking a bigger wheel is wider, it's wide wheels that make them handle oddly.. the other thing I found is that having heavier wheels affected the acceleration too, comparing the standard 13" alloys to golf g60 15" steels the difference was noticeable

lots of help chaps , thank you

i appreciate about the slower accelerating by putting larger diameter wheels on,

but the other side of the coin is that you will gain more top end...

watch out Lewis Hamilton.. :giggle:

i will put some pics up when it is taxed & insured at the end of the month

^ Look forward to it! :)

Nearing the time when my fronts need changing, so would be interested to know what you guys are running tyre wise & bearing in mind I'm on standard 165 R13 etc. I've had Avon Enviros on for what seems ages now but not sure they're still available? :smirk:

You would only gain top end if you have the power to utilise the gearing.

Indeed. Let's face it, Felicias of all types (special projects aside) have never been reknowned for their raw power. I'm not entirely sure how many of the 75 under the bonnet of my Fun haven't died.

They're not exactly known for their rust-resistance, either! (I know, I've got one :rain: )

Mine can outdrag cosworths and scoobies, and i would still advise sticking with the absolute smallest wheels you can humanly get away with, I had no choice but to use a 15" wheel due to having v6 mondeo brake calipers and 280mm brake discs, but if I could I'd be rolling on 14" steels from a mk3 golf..

I like steel wheels personally becaus it doesn't matter if you hit things with them, you can just knock them back out with a mallet.

I had 175/70 13 on my old 1.3 estate simply because that's what was on it when I bought it so when a tyre needed replacing I stuck with the same. It certainly seemed to handle better than my current car which it's rather understeery on it's 165's. You wouldn't think going up one size would make much difference but it does seem to.

I'm thinking of going up to 185/60 14's if I can find the right set of wheels at the right price but I wouldn't go any bigger than that. There's really no point with the power available.

Not actually correct, unless you fit tyres that give you a larger rolling diameter, and the standard gearing had you significantly past peak power at Vmax.

What kills the acceleration is inceased unsprung mass rather than higher gearing. The effective change in mass that you need to accelerate when fittign a different wheel/tyre combo is actually given by the 4th power of the change on a set of scales. For instance, going from 13" steels to 18" alloys often increases mass by about 10kg per wheel, which gives you an effective need to accelerate about 40 tonnes/rotational velocity.

I'm running 195/45 16s on Team Dynamics ProRace 1.2 black wheels which came off my Clio. My Fun arrived with cheap cracked 195/50 15s and the ride significantly improved with the larger wheels. I've put some all-season tyres on the 15s so will probably refit them to the Fun. I think 195 is about the maximum width for my setup which is ET36-ET38, but I can't remember what is stamped on my spare.

Going from the "Halfrauds specials" to some decent Team Dynamics rims probably took off about 2kg per corner, maybe more depending on how badly designed the originals were. See #17 for why this might give you better ride, acceleration and fuel economy (oh yes and braking too).

That said, I'd agree that 195 width is about the maximum for a car like a Felly that was designed around 155 or 165 tyres, unless you actively re-engineer the suspension.
