What do I need (Clarification please)

Featured Replies

Morning all,

I'm after a bit of help please, I'm wanting to fit a Bolero to my 07 Octy VRS to replace the standard stream mp3 (mainly to bring the interior up to date a bit)

I may concider other units but trying to keep the costs down as much as possible (wedding next year)

Can anyone tell me exactly what I need.

2007 VRS estate tdi

Maxidot (White)

front and rear parking sensors

Instead, why not look for a VW RCD310 which would also give you DAB?

Are they easy to get working?

IIRC, fitting a Bolero would probably need a canbus upgrade too or you could get battery drain problems. I don't know if the RCD310 (or RCD510) would also need the extra bits but they'd definitely need an additional (cheap) window aerial for DAB.

I'm amazed that they're not use more often as upgrades.

I think you will lose the air con and parking sensor display on the HU.

Very easy. All you need is the aerial and a replacement trim (about £7 from a dealer). I have a glass-mount aerial on the tailgate, took about half hour to install, without rushing.

However: not all RCD310's have DAB. But, I have one for sale that does. (in the for sale section) It's being sold as I upgraded to an RNS unit.

This is true. Although the "original" gauges still work and the parking sensor beeping still works fine :)

I forgot about the climate display etc.

The Bolero/RCD510 will be able to show a graphical display but coding may be required - check that it can do it on your MY though. I'm not sure what the RCD310 shows so maybe RainbowFire can tell us?

On a Pre-FL it is well-documented that Bolero, RCD310, RNS315 (Amundensen) and RNS510 (Columbus) will not show parking or climate. They are, in effect, from a different generation of the electrics. To the best of my knowledge it is only parking and climate displays that are lost though. (Although if you upgrade to the "right" version of Amundsen or Columbus you can get RVC instead: no distance display, but you'll be able to look at what you're about to hit ;) ;)  )

As far as parking goes, you need to change the system from PDC to OPC (there's a couple of guides on here of how to do that) But IMHO that is a lot of work just to get a picture on the screen. The beeping does still work fine, I've really not missed having no display.

{Edit: This is one of the guides: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/261422-pdc-ops-advice/?p=3151338 }

I vaguely recall that the climate display can be regained with some re-wiring, but again, not really something I've been into as it is duplication of existing functions.

{Edit: this appears to require a retro-fit of the FL climate controls as well as a new fascia. Again, a lot of money and faffing around for a duplicate function)

Really fancy reverse camera though! Gonna keep an eye out for a 510 I think!

RNS315 (Amundsen) does RVC too. Whichever you look at, make sure it has the connector on the back for it.......not all of them do.

DAB is the same, it's usually a black FAKRA connector.

Just as an extra, if you decide to go for the RNS315 then (IIRC), the version that has the DAB couldn't have the RVC and vice versa.

No problems with the RNS510DAB though.

Nope. I  have both on my RNS315 :)

(....along with Bluetooth)

Looks like this.....

It might be hard to find in "Skoda" though (Amundsen+). Mine is from a SEAT: no difference, as far as I know, other than the SEAT logo appears on start-up (all of 3 seconds or so), and the buttons and some of the menus are coloured red (instead of green).

My apologies RainbowFire. :(

I'd been trying to recall these quotes from a VW brochure:-

RCD 510 touch-screen
DAB radio system 1 and rear-view camera.

Including dash-mounted MP 3 compatible 6 CD autochanger with 8 speakers, SD card reader and AUX -in socket in front centre console and rear-view camera. In lieu of DAB digital radio receiver

Rear-view camera Displayed via vehicle’s audio system display. Only in conjunction with RNS 315 navigation/DAB radio system and RNS 510 DVD navigation/DAB radio system 2

So it looks as if the RCD510 (not the RCD310 that I mentioned) may be able to have a RVC but without the DAB option in one part of their blurb but says it definitely can't in another part. Is there any wonder I was confused? :S

No worries mate :)

Confusion runs rife on the VW head units. For example: Amundsen and Amundsen+, the only difference seems to be "+" on the front. They share the same features IIRC, so you can have a better Amundsen than someone with an Amundsen+.....there's no easy way off seeing from the front and the model/model number is fairly unhelpful too. Also some will have come with bits switched off (like the Blacklines having no mic and BT disabled).

It can be quite sticky making sure you have exactly what you're after.

Decided to take a punt on a 510, not fussed about the red buttons and I'd like to change the dash trims to carbon so fingers crossed I can fit one without to much fuss (bit of a technophobe!)
