Concerns about buying the 110BHP Octavia

Featured Replies

Hello

I've been thinking about getting an Octavia 'Elegance' 110BHP TDi Estate for a while now. It looks perfect for my needs. I've had a VW Golf Mark 3 TDi for 6 years and I now have a family and want to 'upgrade'. A couple of days ago I saw on the 'honest John' website that there were problems with the ECU for this engine. It doesn't seem clear from the site whether all ECUs for the 110 engine will develop this problem or not.

I have a feeling that if I contact a private seller or dealer and ask them to tell me the ECU number for the Octavia they have for sale then they won't be able to help much.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thanks in advance.

Ok, let me put it another way: has anyone any experience of the 110 TDi engine, either -ve or +ve?

I can't recall 100BHP TDI ECUs being a major issue with members here. If you buy from a Skoda dealer then the car will come with a warranty. If you buy privately you could get the car checked with VAG-COM software which will give you the ECU part number. Personally if I found such a car at the right price, in the right condition, and with a complete service history, I would go ahead and buy it.

Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking I might just do that. I'm looking at a 2 or 3 year old 110 Elegance estate and will probably get one from a garage in the area (Wiltshire). Autotrader seems a good place to look. Anyone got any thoughts on the best place to look?

From reading through some of the posts, lots of people seem happy with their 110TDi Elegance. Probably will just go ahead and buy without worrying about the ECU, especially if it's a pain to check. I like the idea of 'mod'ing the car cheaply to get more power (without any fuel economy change) - I didn't realise that was possible - great :-)

I believe this affected the very early 110TDi's with 8 pin connectors to the injector pump. I thought that was resolved before the Octavia got the 110TDi. If not I'm sure it was resolved well before Skoda changed the badging from SLX to Elegance.

Apart from being nosier than modern diesels the 110TDi offers reasonable performance and is very economical.

Responds well to tuning boxes and remaps as well.

Cheers

Thanks logiclee, you sound like you know what you're talking about. I'm reassured.

110 TDi is a fantastic engine, ours remapped to 164 bhp, still gives 50+ mpg & 81000 miles later still going strong

I'd say you aint going to go far wrong with a 110 Octy, strong as horses.

Very pleased with mine after 56k miles in 2 years
