Helix Clutch/pedal noise

Featured Replies

Please can someone explain why I always get a squeaky noise after some rain/moist conditions.

Recently fitted and always done this, I thought it would wear away but clearly not lol

This occurrs when pressing and depressing the clutch pedal

Thanks in advance

Is it coming from the pedal itself? One of my previous cars was like this in moist conditions.

Yep sounds like its coming from the pedal. I assume its somthing to do with the release bearing. Just wasn't sure if it was a common thing

I'm not to sure now - total stab in the dark, But....

Is there a return spring on the pedal? Could be that which has dried up, mine was like a spring twanging noise.

Haha tbh I have no idea lol. I'll try and upload a vid : )

I guess you are running the helix SMF clutch setup? How do you rate it?

Hope you find the cure for your noise too.

Thanks mate, yep I am indeed. It feels OEM+, but I personally feel the Sachs setup with the DMF was better. The Sachs felt more harsh aswel.

Each to their own : )

How noisey is it the chatter?

  • Author

In all fairness, not too bad. I'm hardly in traffic, when I am I keep the pedal depressed anyway.

The SMF helix do is pretty refined I believe

When you say the Sachs is better, in what way? I'm replacing mine in a few months and currently have a Sachs. I'm planning on going helix as everyone seems to rave its great but if you've used both you're expertise would be good to hear!

Helix is an all out performance clutch.

Sachs is for people who want a clutch that will last a little longer than oem ;)

I have had both, you really cant compare them tbh. The only downside to the helix is the car will sound broke to the un trained ear, so will be forever explaining why it sounds like a bag of spanners :p

I had a Sachs clutch that dated back to 2009, I'm not certain it's the same one they are still selling now, as I'd assume they would have made some changes over the years (?). The Sachs felt like an on/off switch and the clutch pedal was twice (poss more) as stiff compared to the helix I have now.

I have random metallic noises here and there lol.

The DMF felt more natural and I preferred the power delivery in the Sachs. The helix doesn't have the same kick back.

I'm speaking from my experience therefore others may have varying opinions/experiences.

something wrong with your helix!

sachs is very oem feel!

if you didnt know it was fitted you wouldn't be able to tell it was there!

the helix is awesome in comparison to the sachs! (also had both)

drop the loud pedal at 1500rpm on a hybrid in 6th and just listen to the thing bite and grip like its life depended on it!

also bite is much sharper and pedal feel is stiffer than the

i've had a sachs (the dmf killed itself after 20k)

and 3 helix's and smf's on 3 pd engines

I like the idea of the Helix setup, it's just the loud chatter that's putting me off tbh.

it isn't really an issue though, i actually liked it! taking the car for new tyres, erm mate you do realise your gearbox is knackered.... oh yeah mate ;)

the noise is only at idle so dip the clutch and voila

also don't listen to all the internet scaremongering about vibes and damage to the gearbox, its a lot of banana skins

My experience is similar to BigJase,

Quite comical with passengers in the car, when making progress you can literally see their heads jolt as you change gear when the clutch grabs hold :D

I have the helix on mine with a smf. It's ****ing loud at idle and feels noticibly heavier than standard but it does have a nice smooth bite to it.

I too have had both Sachs with DMF and (currently) Helix with SMF. The latter is without doubt more stiff on the pedal and violently crisp on gear changes when making progress.

When driven normally, apart from the clattering at low revs you wouldn't know. I don't mind the noise at idle personally. I often get told my car sounds terrible or the exhaust is blowing (it isn't).

At least if folk think the car is a bag of spanners they'll leave it alone! :-)

Hmm some very different eperiences, my sachs felt brutal and the pedal was ubber stiff. The helix feels more OEM.

I need to test someone else's Helix! I'm getting worried now lol

Quite a few helix users here, right then..... When in first gear, waiting in traffic, clutch down, does the car try and creep forward? Mine does this quite often. Same again in reverse gear?

Also coming out of first gear, e.g pulling away putting it into second I struggle to change gear and sometimes have to force it out (of gear 1). Sometimes 'revving out' of gear helps prevent the stiffness. I find this really annoying with the helix sometimes! Is this just mine or across the board with all helix setups with SMF?

Mine doesnt creep in any gear nor is it hard to get out or into any gear.

Something doesnt sound right mate :(

  • Author

Seriously? What the hell! I thought it was due to the SMF? Now I'm rather cheesed off tbh, spent a lot on money on this aswel .... Not happy to say the least.

Ill await to hear from other members, just out of interest who fitted yours mate?

Thanks for your input btw mate - much appreciated.

I have covered approx 160k so not sure if this plays a part? However only covered 4k if that on the helix setup

Dirty Torque in Shrewsbury fitted mine along with 90% of the other bits on my car.

Mines the same as Joel's, no creeping and perfectly smooth selection of all gears. Fitted mine myself.

It sounds like your clutch isn't fully disengaging so despite having the pedal fully pressed, the engine is stll turning the gearbox slightly making it hard to change gears.

Do you know if the concentric slave cylinder was changed along with the clutch and the system fully bled?

  • Author

Ah I see, yep everything was changed and fully bled. Might have to get this checked out now as its not to do with the SMF as advised by the garage.

Thanks for the help guys
