Buying a new Fabia, painting and warranty issues

Featured Replies

Thinking of buying a brand new car for son nr. 2 possibly a Fabia as I know these inside out by now.

What I definitely will do on receipt of said car is remove and refit wheels and bolts greased/oiled to stop corrosion and aid future removal. Also paint drums and all major suspension parts/components - the parts that rust far too quickly - including a coat of lacquer too. Other parts under body too e.g brackets

The question is - if I have a major problem (worst case being perhaps car rejection due to a major fault like engine) - will they just tell me to eff off cos I've "painted" the car?

Can't see a problem. To void a warranty you have to modify a component in such a way as to potentially affect it's durability, and each part of the car is considered in isolation...so if you don't touch the engine and maintain it properly the warranty on the the engine should be intact.

Even if you do something to a component then the warranty on it should not be affected if what you do does not affect the way it functions....in my book painting things like suspension components can't do them any harm,so that's OK.

There are indeed a lot of things you can do to a car to void the warranty but the things you mention are not included in my opinion.

As above on anything like Engine or Drivetrain problems and warranty.

I would certaily do the greasing and lubing, coat and protect, as soon as you can, before there is any salt on the car, or even detergent.

so clean properly first.

& use the correct grease for each job, ie Copper Slip, White Water Proof, Red Rubber Grease etc.

very good & removable again is  Finnigans Waxoyl (Clear not Black) or Dry Motor Bike Chain Dressing.

& paint the drums.

But if painting brackets use rust inhibitor and the correct etch primer first on bare metal, primers and quality paints,

these will not require lacquer to be applied.

(if you go spraying lacquer on mechanical parts it will not last for that long, the correct treatment of quality/industrial paint will.).

Best not to use Car Body Paints for heavy duty parts underneath.

For your Paint, & corrosion or 12 years 'Panel  warranty, Perforation & corrosion from inside panels'.

the parts or paint need to be able to be inspected so no old style underseal/Stone chip coating, (moisture trappers)

if you were ever going to think or claiming on rust underneath.

(eg, people might coat the sills black and then find corrosion forming under the coating they applied.

Cleaned and waxed can be better for shrugging off moisture so reducing corrosion rather than trapping moisture.)
