Very odd incident - any ideas?

Featured Replies

So I've had my Citigo for a year now, it just had it's first service a week ago. I haven't had a single problem with the car, up until today.

Got in the car, started it up, and the engine just sounded bizarre, sort of high pitched and rattling, I can't really explain it but it was quite alarming as it was so different from how it normally sounds. The car was also very "jerky" (whilst idling, I didn't drive it)  and then I got a strong smell of fumes in the cabin. I noticed that the EPC warning light and the exhaust managment system warning light had remained illuminated. I turned it off and restarted and it was back to normal. I've been out in it several more times today and it's been perfectly fine, no warning lights, no weird engine noises, so smell, no change in performance.

My other half says not to worry about it, and that it was probably just a "glitch". Should I just wait and see if it happens again,  or get the dealers to take a look? Anyone else experienced anything like this?

get it in for a fault code scan at the very least. I assume it's still under warranty?

Yes it's just a year old. I will do that, thank you.

Get the scan and keep us informed mate

Hope its just a glitch and nothing more sinister

Cheers

The only time that I have heard of something like this is when a car has been started and turned off again from cold within seconds (e.g. to move it back a couple of feet on the drive) which has then caused issues on the later re-start. Modern car engines hate this sort of treatment.

The emissions light and smell of fumes indicate over fuelling which is usually bad news for the catalyst. Be interested to hear what the dealer says.

Ah thank you, that's very interesting, as before this happened the car had been started up from cold just to reverse it to a spot a few metres away to allow access for a delivery van. The problem occurred when I started it up again a couple of hours later.

You're welcome. I always let the handbrake off my car and roll it a few feet (when possible) rather than start and stop it. From what you have said I doubt that you have an actual fault with your car. it was just complaining about what you had done!

Yes it very much sounds like it, especially as it's been absolutely fine since. I've just never come across this before. Thanks again!

I think its called 'wheely bin moves' in the car trade, you move the car 4 feet to put your wheely bin out so the engine runs for a few seconds before you swich it off.Mind you the 1.2 tsi engine in my Yeti seems to cope OK with short runs.
