Two weeks of hell sorted at last.

Featured Replies

Four weeks ago I realised I needed a new cv boot as the graphite grease was sprayed in a lovely arc in the wheel well.

Got it done and was informed that my console bushes were f***** and really needed replacing pronto.

Ok, I'll replace everything, console bushes, wishbone arms, front bushes, both ball joints and all the bolts required to do the job, should last my tenure of car ownership and not need done by me again. Save like hell work every hour and two weeks later I have enough dosh and all the parts needed. So, get the job done at the friendly garage (where they have the ramp and special tools to do the job, I am thinking that will be it done. No!

More problems! argh! sussed them out, two loose bolts (not torqued to the correct setting) and two bolts over tightened and consequently stripped threads, result, loose ball joint. FFS, can it get any worse? (ask a stupid question) answer, yes, car pulling all over the road due to uneven tyre wear and wheels being mis-aligned.

Get the 4 wheel alignment done, big improvement in the dry, still all over the place in the wet, put the front wheels on the rear and vice versa, it now drives straight under power in the wet too. Hooray!

Cars's not finished yet! There is now a pulse through the brake pedal, I originally thought it must be caused by the consol bushes being f*****,  but no, so, I check all the brake discs, fronts look fine and were replaced less than a year ago, check the back and was horrified by what I found. The outer face looks fine but, the inner is anything but. The're toast, I still don't know how it got through it's MOT a short while ago. I reckon another week would have seen them break, the grooves were so deep, but only on both inners (weird or what?). The pads(both inners) are like crumbly razor blades, the outers have 3-4 mm left on them. I replace the pads and discs on the back hopping that, that will cure the problem. It's certainly a lot smoother but the pulse although diminished is still there. FFS!

Replaced the front discs and pads today, smooth service resumed, with no pulses, and the car now handles like a dream.

At last!

A little patience now while the brakes bed in and I will be a happy camper again.

Do you ever begin to think that someone up there doesn't like you?

There's no-one up there, it's 'Ze Germans' that don't like you!

I too have had to replace virtually every single moving/wearing part on my car since acquiring it because it's designed to last ten years then fall apart like every other German car on the road.

Not weird rear discs seem to wear more on the inside for some reason

Not weird rear discs seem to wear more on the inside for some reason

I have never seen it so bad before. Truly freaked me out!

Its a combination of corrosion and the fact that the rear brakes don't do much. The pads end up not moving freely and so don't hit the discs evenly or at all.
