Playbook QNX

Featured Replies

Is there a command line (Similar to the Command line in Windiws/DOS) that the ordinary Playbook user can access in order to run QNX routines at user demand. If so, how do I access it ?

The reason for asking is that both the cameras on my Playbook packed up suddenly without warning and alll I am getting is a black screen and the well-known 4003 error message. The widespread reports on the web suggest that this error message relates to hardware failure and that the only solution is to return the unit tio RIM for  repair. Of course this is for a  fee ! Surprise ! However, some users have reported that the manifestation of this problem is inconsistent and that they have managed to restore camera function without touching the hardware and there have been suggestions that the problem is software related, soecifically caused by a bad os update or badly written third oarty app or by a virus.

Personally, I suspect that its a virus embedded in one or more apps which acts to turn-off the ONX server which controls the server that controls the cameras. So all you need to do is either do a comprehensive low-level reset of the machine (By removing the battery, this would hopefully clear all memory including any bits not normally accessible by ONX) or employ a software routine that will reverse the action if the virus and turn-on thd cameras.

I'm loath to do a battery removal as, I understand, that means doing a near total "Tear down" of the hardware - in addition to opening the PB case you also have to remove the circuit boards housing the main board and the flash drive, before the battery can be removed. So, I'm focusing on seeing whether its possible to do anything through a command line instruction (If a command line exists, which I doubt) or possibly use a home-baked ONX routine to first poll all the servers in the Playbook implementation of ONX, establish their names, addresses and status and then reset the camera server,  if its off - I'm thinking that oerhaos this could be embedded in a java app. In writing this, I'm presuming that there is an ONX SDK available to the likes of me.

I've already tried backing up the software and doing a "Security Wioe" using the on-board os option and reinstalling the software a couple if times, but to no effect.

Of course, it could be a problem with the rom in which case it might have to go back to RIMM for flashing/replacement.
