vibration at back on 4x4 octavia

Featured Replies

ive a vibration coming from the back when engine is under load at about 60-70mph go over 70mph it goes away sit under it and it goes away and is worse when in 6th gear, any ideas of what this could be? ive tried front wheels to back and no diffrence regards steve

I has this issue on my 2006 2.0TDI 4x4 Octavia.  It was much worse when the weather was hot than cold (and therefore most prevalent later in the day rather than the cool early morning), and also I got a whine at these speeds when I came off the accelerator (ie on the over-run).

The garage identified and changed a number of components:

I changed the wheels / tyres around (and to a different set) but this made no difference.

Firstly they changed the engine mounts. This made no difference.

Next they changed the haldex unit and the rear diff / axle.  This made no difference.

Lastly the changed the transfer box (at the rear of the gearbox) and the drive shaft - this cured it.  All this was done over a 12 month period as each fix seemed to make some difference but it always came back (in the warm weather).

Other investigations I have made on the forum suggest that the rear drive shaft coupling is the likely cause - and this is probably borne out of my experience in that changing the drive shaft fixed the issue.

My car had the Skoda Used Car extended warranty on it, and they paid out for all the work, so I was not too unhappy about everything being changed.

I had identical symptoms from my Scout ( pre FL ) which was just out of warranty but covered by a third party warranty . There was a deal done between Skoda and the warranty company .

The solution was simply the replacement of the rear drive shaft , which was correctly diagnosed first time by Skoda Waenfawr in Snowdonia . This was done over two years ago .

I think it's interesting that just the shaft itself needed to be replaced. Is the thinking then that it was off balance?

I'm experiencing vibrations from the back of my 2004 Octavia 4x4.
