No discernible difference between 1st and 2nd in 7 speed DSG

Featured Replies

i was driving in and out a long essentially flat lane over the past couple of days, towing a twin axle trailer.

I have bytimes pondered why the Octavia 7 speed DSG does not appear to want to hold first, more than very briefly, even with zero throttle input.

Anyway, whilst pulling the trailer I noticed the DSG had slipped into 2nd, the lane was moderately rough with thick long grass up the middle dragging below the car, plus the extra drag from the trailer.

I noted the revs and indicated speed on the speedo, braked virtually absolutly to a standstill, to provoke the transmission to change down, all without ever touching the throttle, and watched the speedo and indicated rpms, with 1st showing on the display.

No difference whatsoever from 2nd.

Back into 2nd, again noting the indicated speed and engine rpms.

Still the same.

Braked almost to a standstill to induce the downshipt to 1st again.

After settling in 1st, no difference in indicated speed or rpms.

I would add that 1st felt as fast as 2nd subjectively, which was precisely why I thought to check in the first place.

I repeated the excerise in both directions, no difference.

So what is the difference in the gear ratios?

Hi Marcus,

Can't say exactly what difference there is but mine definitely holds first when negotiating seriously steep 1:4 hills. From what I've read it just seems they've given us a crawler gear which usually isn't needed.

I suspect the reason that speed/revs don't seem to change between the two gears is that at very low speeds, the 'box will be slipping the clutch.

Put it in manual mode and you see the difference.
