Dolomite or Spitzberg alloys?

Featured Replies

I have an SE+ on order and have yet to hear whether it's being built yet (delivery date 31/10/13). Looking at the alloy choices, I decided to leave the standard Dolomites on the order, as I wasn't fussed on the Spitzberg's looks over the stock wheels. However, thinking about it a bit more, I'm wondering whether the Spitzbergs would be easier to keep clean than the Dolomites? I do like to regularly wash and polish my cars, so ease of cleaning is important. Has anyone gone from Dolomites to Spitzbergs (or vice versa) and noticed any differences with keeping them clean? If I want to order the Spitzbergs, (if I can still change the order? ) I'll guess I'll need to contact the dealership asap. All views would be welcome.

If you decide you want to change you need to contact the dealer without delay. I ordered an Elegance and was told delivery would be around 12-14 weeks. But I really wanted 16" Moon alloys rather than one of the 17" options. This isn't a standard option so I had to bypass the dealer - lots on this on other threads -  but the change was confirmed within about three weeks of placing my original order. Despite this a new order had to be raised (causing my dealer to have kittens because he thought he had two cars coming for me). If I understood correctly, once the order gets to a certain point in the system even if the build hasn't commenced nothing can be changed.

I have to say one of the secondary benefits of the 16" Moon alloys is they are very easy to keep clean.

Think of the two options mentioned Dolomites would be the better option for cleaning, Spitz's are a fussy design which often indicates more time needed to get them looking right.

Oh I'm with Paul 16" Moons are the ultimate choice of alloy for the Yeti ;)

Two Briskodians with Elegance spec Yetis and neither have 17" wheels! Thanks for your thoughts on the 16" wheel preference but this isn't an option I'm considering.

The Dolomites do indeed look easier to clean but I'm thinking that the rims and outer prongs of the Spitzbergs could be washed and you could leave the "gaps" between the prongs for really thorough wash and polish sessions? Anyone with the Spitzbergs out there with an opinion on this?

Spitzbergs are easily cleaned with a pressure washer.

Oh that's frashacre's old monster in front, then aerofurb's first 170 and far right lady P who's not been on here for some time I believe. First yeti adventure at the invite of Graham; great day had by all.

Good use of your Photo,s from Grahams "Welsh Adventure" and also on the Seat height thread. Read this "Welsh Adventure" thread the other day, this was in the days when Graham was a pre Yeti owner. What ever happened to Lady P, she disappeared from the Yeti Forum so quickly?

Tony

I had an SE with Dolomites and now have an Elegance with Spitzbergs.

Dolomites are definitely easier to clean, and on balance I think look better, being plainer and less fussy. Chunky like the car.

To be fair the time taken to clean the wheels is far less important to me than how it makes the car look.

Have you considered the Erebus option? Can you have those on an SE+?

Don't put 16s on. Looks under wheeled(?)

I think the Erebus are options on any model (foc on se+) but I'm not keen on them tbh. As I've yet to hear from the dealer as to whether or not I can change, I think I'll make a decision tomorrow once I hear back from them. Sticking with the Dolomites looks like the route I'm going down though (more comparison shots online to look at until then methinks).

I'me with the "moonies", really easy to clean! I do wonder at the complexity of some of the alloys you see on many makes of car. Must be a nightmare and time consuming to keep looking smart.

My Yeti has arrived at the dealers but with the original wheels, not the Spitzbergs I ordered. The dealer says Skoda have told them that Spitzbergs are not an option on SE Pluses, despite the brochure stating quite clearly that they are. Someone cocked up. Should I make a fuss or just bite the bullet?

Fuss!!

+2 for fuss....Annapurnas look really nice.

OK then, fuss it is!

I like my Erebus alloys...

That's interesting. If you have an order form with the Spitzberg's optioned, I'd say you're on pretty firm ground, as it states clearly in the brochure that they're an option for the SE+. As your order was accepted and no-one got back to you to the contrary prior to delivery, I'd make a big fuss if I were you. Start with the dealer and then SUK if you don't get any joy at a local level.

Btw, the dealer got back to me a few minutes ago to say that my order has progressed too far for me to change it, so it's out of my hands anyway. Looks like the Dolomites will be easier to clean than the Spitzbergs and I wasn't fussed either way on the looks.

Dealer said that the Skoda factory quoted the small print in mitigation for not supplying the correct wheels and that there was nowt he could do about it.

Following this forum's advice to make a fuss, I went on line to Skoda UK and explained the problem. This afternoon a very nice customer relations manager rang me back from SUK and assured they would look into it and get back to me. I am moderately optimistic of a satisfactory outcome. Fingers crossed.

Coming from a non-Yeti owner, its all about personal preference but another vote for the Dolomites here.

Not only do they look nicer they will be easier to clean as the Spitzbergs have some tight corners and angles preventing easy access with a sponge (the alloys on the wife's Octavia Scout versus those on my old Octavia vRS (in my sig picture below) are miles quicker to clean).

The only thing that would sway me towards the Spitzbergs is they come as standard on the Elegance and I am vain. I want everyone to know I'm driving a more expensive model :giggle:
