Best halogen bulbs?

Featured Replies

Looking to upgrade the halogens on the Touran as missing the Octavia's Xenons and it doesn't have fogs.

What's the best option?

Osram nightbreaker gold limited edition

Osram Nightbreaker Plus or the Phillips equivalent.

I have Osram nightbreaker plus bulbs in my Fabia. I too wanted to recreate the power of the Xenon's fitted to my Octavia.

Unfortunately I've been sorely disappointed with the performance with the Nightbreakers. I ran a standard bulb in one headlight alongside a nightbreaker in the other headlight for a week or so, and although the nightbreaker is very slightly brighter than the standard headlight they are leagues away from Xenons and I don't consider them worth the money.

When they blow (which, I am led to believe will be soon....they have a short lifespan) I will replace them with standard bulbs.

Euro car parts have these on offer at the moment at £14.99 I think

I think that's the downside is short life.

Looking at retro fitting fogs (it gets really foggy due to lakes and rivers round here )

But dealer says it's £500 just in parts!

Osram were very good in replacing original NB bulbs failed. They wanted PoP and replaced them after checking them. Very good service.

Tried Halfords own brand extreme bulbs and Philips ones. Osram or Philips were the best by far. I found they had better reach and better colour for illuminating street signage

The old Osram Nightbreakers did have a short life, but following lots of complaints they changed the filament slightly and remarketed them as the "Plus" edition which has a much longer life. I've had them in my Yeti for over 2 years.

And to Booke23, of course they are not as "bright" as HID's, as they use a different method of producing the light. It is not the brightness as much as the "colour" of the light produced. A standard halogen is in the "yellow" scale, whereas a HID is in the "blue" scale. The Osrams and Phillips, and to some extent the Halfords/Ring ones are more in the middle.

I have Osram Nightbreaker Plus in my car. I certainly notice a difference over the standard headlights bulbs.

I haven't had the pleasure of Xenon's yet, but I'm sure I will want some!

Going from factory HIDs to any kind of halogen bulb is a massive downgrade and you never really get used to it I'm afraid.

I went from the lovely crisp Xenons in my RX8 to the 'candle in a jamjar' lights of the Octy.. I've upgraded to Osram Nightbreaker Plus, which is an improvement, but there's no real replacement for HID.

Another vote of Nightbreaker+ as "best halogen bulbs I've ever used". Shop around on places like AMazon and Powerbulbs, and you'll probably get them for about the price of "normal" bulbs too.

Yep.......so much so that I am on the verge of forking out for a set of Depo projector headlights and D2S HID kit for my Fabia.

I've got Ring 120% at the moment, but thats just because they were on offer. As good as the osrams in my experience
