Brake fluid level

Featured Replies

For those of you with newer cars, has anyone noticed the brake fluid level when delivered - was it right up to the 'max' mark or somewhere in between 'max' and 'min'. My car is coming up to three years old now (but with less than 8K on the clock) but the brake fluid level is about midway between the marks, rather lower than I would have expected for normal pad wear. There are no signs of leaks so maybe it wasn't up to maximum when new. It's not that easy to see the level through the side of the plastic reservoir (if you want to avoid removing the cap unnecessarily) but shining a torch helps.

Almost certainly a new car will have the Brake Fluid at the Max Mark.

??,Are you going to be getting your brake fluid changed at 3 years, even though it is low mileage.?

I would especially on a low mileage car that does not get used often.

Do your pads have normal wear, have you checked?

Did the car have a 2 year/20,000 miles service and the rear Drums off?

Now at the 3 year service it really needs the Brake Cylinders checked & all the pipes.

The MOT will be picking up on any brake pipes weaping or the likes, but a service before then would be the best plan.

Hi George, the 3 year service and MOT are due December and I will ensure the fluid is changed. As far as I am aware the rear drums were removed at the 2 year service. It's just that today was the first time I have checked the level myself and was surprised that it was a bit lower than I would have expected, assuming it is factory filled to the 'max' level. I'd best keep a close eye on it for the next month. Braking is fine and the pedal isn't at all spongy so probably no imminent danger.

My 1.6tdi is new with just over 300 miles and looks to be bang in the middle of min and max.

bear in mind brake fluid is used for clutch and brakes
