Intermittent Binding Brakes

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Octavia II 1.9TDi Ambiente 05/2005. Intermittent brake binding problem.

The car sometimes feels like there is resistance when driving - O/S/F and N/S/R discs (& inner hubs) tend to be hot to the touch when this happens. The other discs are normally cooler.

It typically does this for consecutive journeys over a day or so, then there will be a similar number of journeys without the binding.

The amber brake warning light is also on intermittently, though not always consistent with the binding.

N/S/R caliper recently changed, O/S/F caliper recently had pads & slides removed & cleaned up, and piston moving OK. When car was raised in workshop, the said wheels moved freely.

The brakes are otherwise working normally and I do not notice anything wrong with the pedal - still firm.

Any thoughts on the cause of this problem please?

Should I start with a full bleed and fluid change?

Hopefully this solved.

Front o/s pads removed and caliper slides cleaned up (& copperslip). May have been grit or other debris on pads cleared by this and hard braking.

It has been mentioned on this forum that air could have got into the ABS block when the calipers were changed. Therefore also changed brake fluid at VAG independent (£40).  I assume this was done in the recommended way as described elsewhere on this forum - i.e. with VCDS plugged in, and bled from all four calipers + two bleed nipples below the master cylinder.

Anyway, seems to be better now.
