Jacks & axle stands - how do you do it?

Featured Replies

How do you guys jack up the car and then get it on to stands?

The reinforced jacking points on the sills seem to be too small to get the jack and the stands on it at the same time.  So the usual sequence of - jack it up, put the stand underneath, lower it on to stand, lower and pull the jack away - doesn't look as if it's gonna work.

There's plenty of dire warnings and horror stories about trying to use any other unreinforced parts of the sill, or the suspension/floor pans.

At the front I always use axle stands underneath the front wishbone rear bush mount, it fits nicely into the shape of the axle stand and is a nice and strong support point. No good if you are removing suspension components though!

I was wondering exactly this the other day.

Although I started with wondering how to get both front wheels off the floor at the same time.

And ramps seem to be the answer to that one.

You can get a hockey puck and cut a slot in it to go round the seal but I have wondered about axle stands. Is it save to put a load onto the bush mounts? On my rear axle (estate) there is a warning sticker I put on to warn against jacking on the axle!

If you are working on the front you can jack on the chassis leg, you can remove the plastic undercover but if your jack pad is flat and has a decent rubber you can get away with leaving it on. Then place the axle stands on the jacking points.

If you are working on the rear and you have a decent jack, again with a flat pad, you can jack on the rear suspension arms centre mounting point to lift both sides of the vehicle. Place the axle stands on the jacking points.

If only these http://www.jackpointjackstands.com/ were cheaper and available in the UK !!

They look good! I see the logic in their thinking.

Who's going to be first to suggest a group buy?
