Odd noise, possibly wheel bearing?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Long time no visit - means the Skoda has been running fine I guess!

It has, just developed an odd noise though, around 25-30mph what sounds like heavy tyre noise, a rubbing sound almost starts, and is then present at any speed after.

It doesn't increase or decrease in volume, and doesn't change in rpm or pitch etc.  It's seperate to the engine and (I hope!) turbo as it doesn't change rpm as the engine does.

I'm thinking wheel bearing, but not sure what else it could be.  Tyres are fine, pressures and tread.  Nothing rubbing, car accelerates/decelerates fine, no other odd noise, doesn't get hot or seem to be using more fuel.

Any thoughts - I'm about to call my local specialist to arrange when to drop in for them to check it out.  But before I called, just wondered what else I could mention to them.

Im having the exact same problem mine seemed to be coming from the rear left wheel... bearing seems fine! put my spare wheel on where the noise was coming from and the noise seemed to of stopped...i think mines due to tread wear! is yours coming from a specific corner?

Hmm, now that is interesting.  In all honesty I'm struggling to find if it is a specific corner, I think front passenger but neither me nor the missus can track it down.

I've been mostly driving our 22 yr old MX5 recently so odd noises I've got used to accepting!

I'm wondering if a loose wheel nut now...  Something to check, might be osscilating slightly?

Oh, one other point that has sprung to mind.  I have had the front mounts replaced, usual MOT find.  They were squeaking for a while, the garage sprayed with WD40 to see if it stopped, which it seemed to.

Just wondering if linked?  Doubtful I know.

Is the noise a droaning sound?

Yes, that's a fair description. It drones, doesn't change in pitch or frequency.

Bit like a mountain bike tyre on a tarmac road.

Ok. Problem solved. Ahem.
