Help! 79,000mile Cambelt change?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've got a 51plate Octavia 1.9TDi (90bhp) on long life service. Last service (with Horners in Manchester was at 53,000 miles and they wrote into the log book next service due 73,000. I passed that a while ago and still no call for service but I thought it'd be just as well to get it serviced anyway as I'm just about to pass the 79,000mile mark.

Am I reading my log book (and comments on here) correctly to think that Horners should really have got me to the replace the cam belt at 90,000km or 55923 ie. just after the last service?

If so - what should I do now considering I'm about 23,000miles over the replacement distance???

Can I carry on for a few days and go to the garage as planned or should I stop driving it and get Horners to come and pick it up?

Mine needs doing at 80k, 1.9TDI

Even though my service book says:

In addition, every 90,000km

Toothed belts for camshaft drive: replace (only TDI and SDI diesel engines...

???

Mine for the non-pd 110bhp tdi says 80k miles , with PD engined TDIs due at 60k

The service book was printed along time ago. The only referance that should be taken as gospel are the recomendations on the latest issue service sheets and the inspection and maintence manual.

Thanks! I'll get it booked in ASAP but won't panic!

Whats the current recommendation for the 110TDI then?

Mine is at 56k now and I'd like an independent opinion before I take it in in 6 weeks time. If it's 80k then I can probably get away with selling the car before then :D

Just had mine serviced and the service sheet I got back afterwards says:

Toothed belt change interval Octavia

  • 1.9Tdi & Sdi up to 4/2001 - 60,000 miles
  • 1.9Tdi & Sdi from 5/2001 - 4/2002 - 80,000 miles
  • 1.9Tdi & Sdi from 5/2002 - 100,000 miles
  • 1.9Tdi & 130bhp PD up to 7/2000 - 60,000 miles
  • 1.9Tdi & 130bhp PD up from 8/2003 - 80,000 miles
  • All petrol engines: check condition at 60,000 miles, every 20,000 thereafter, change as necessary
  • 1.8 litre petrol engine - 120,000 miles

Interesting. That would make mine 100k , but I don't think I'd trust it that long.

Thanks

The octy 1.8T vRS original recommended change IIRC was 120K miles, however you only have to look around the forum to see the results of failure before that mileage. I would get it changed if only for piece of mind despite the recommended interval.

It still is 120k. But it must be inspected at 60k and 20k thereafter. Putting the servicing dealer fully responsable if it breaks after 60k. So I change em at 60k.
